USNC Mechanical Engineer, Build and Test in Oak Ridge, Tennessee

DESCRIPTION:

The Build/Test Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for developing mechanical designs (CAD models) and component and test system manufacturing to support development of USNC's advanced nuclear power systems ranging from the Micro Modular Reactor (MMR), transportable reactor power system (Pylon), Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) to Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator (RTG) systems, and USNC fuel and reactor facility development. The Build/Test Mechanical Engineer will interface with the design teams for the advanced nuclear systems, assist/develop CAD models for components of these systems and be responsible for manufacturing test components using in-house equipment or overseeing external contracts for manufacturing such components. This complex, multi-disciplinary work will require outside-the-box thinking and close attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.

LOCATION OF WORK and TRAVEL:

The position will be based at our Pilot Fuel Manufacturing (PFM) Facility in Oak Ridge, TN. Minimal travel is expected for this position.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Creating detailed 3D models and 2D drawings using industry-standard CAD software

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to design and optimize mechanical components for various applications

  • Operating and programming CNC milling equipment to manufacture precision components

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting CNC processes to ensure the quality and efficiency of production

  • Designing and building test fixtures and apparatuses for evaluating mechanical components and systems

  • Collaborating with R&D teams to develop and implement test plans for product development

  • Conducting tests, analyzing results, and providing insights for design refinement

  • Working closely with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality assurance, to ensure seamless integration of CAD/CAM designs into the manufacturing process

  • Communicating effectively with team members, providing updates on project progress, challenges, and potential solutions.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or related field:

  • B.S. with 3+ years of experience;

  • Proven experience in CAD/CAM design, including proficiency in software such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, NX, or equivalent.

  • Demonstrated expertise in CNC milling operations, including programming and troubleshooting.

  • Hands-on experience in constructing test apparatuses and conducting test.

  • Commitment to an inclusive and collaborative team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to self-motivate; proactive and independent identification, prioritization, and execution of tasks.

  • Demonstrated ability to organize and communicate technical information to teammates, leaders, high-level stakeholders, and customers.

PREFERRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience maintaining CNC milling equipment

  • Experience building mockups or test apparatuse

  • Experience in the commercial nuclear field

  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping

  • Familiarity with finite element analysis tools for structural analysis

  • Experience working within a quality assurance program

  • Passion for the development of advanced nuclear power systems

  • Highly self-motivated and able to prioritize and execute tasks independently.
