JOB SUMMARY

Performs duties associated in the construction or removal of substations in a safe and efficient manner. Accepts lead responsibilities, trains other employees, and assists in maximizing productivity.

LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY

The apprentice level is a training program consisting of classes, Computer Based Curriculum and on-the-job training to obtain the qualifications to achieve the journey (fully qualified) level of the job. As training is satisfactorily completed and performance meets expectations, the apprentice moves to higher levels of responsibility and correspondingly higher pay until the journey level is achieved.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Members in the apprentice program perform duties related to the craft and consistent with their achieved skill level within the program which may include:

• Excavates, installs forms, reinforcement steel, and pours concrete to conform with engineered drawings and specifications to install equipment on concrete foundations.

• Assists with the layout, assembly, and erection of structural steel for bus support tubing, air switches, dead-end structures, and other substation equipment.

• Assures the correct amount of parts and material are available on the job site.

• Assures the correct assembly, installation, and adjustment of all equipment requiring field assembly.

• Assures proper installation and wiring and panels, wire-ways, cabinets, instruments and related equipment.

• Assures assembly and installation of buses, switches, and other power equipment is made according to design drawings, manufacturer’s instruction books and specifications .

• Assists other departments in making final acceptance check of newly installed equipment to ensure safe and dependable operation.

• Assists in all material activities by receiving, storing and assembling excess and salvage to assure that proper accounting procedures are followed..

• Assists in training crew members in the proper operation and care of tools and equipment, the correct installation of materials, and locating the appropriate Construction Standards, Approved Work Method, and Operating Practice related to the job scope.

• Prepares and executes error-free switching for normal test and maintenance, emergency repair, service restoration and operates switches in a safe and professional manner.

REQUIREMENTS

• Associate's Degree or higher in a mechanical /electrical discipline; Or

• Prior military experience in a mechanical/electrical specialty for one enlistment as documented on a completed DD Form 214; Or

• 2 years of experience in a mechanical / electrical role; or certificate of completion of mechanical/electrical training from a vocational / trade school.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Required to work standard and non-standard work schedules to include working overtime, weekends, holidays, on-call, and call-outs.

• Requires travel.

• Required to work at heights up to and exceeding thirty (30) feet, underground and in confined spaces.

• May be exposed to extreme conditions and inclement weather.

• May work under hazardous conditions.

• Required to work in energized substations with exposure of up to and including 500 kV.

• Requires wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

• Obtain or maintain required OG&E certification/training (e.g., switchman, first aid, CPR, defensive driving).

SPECIAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

• This position is classified as a Safety-Sensitive Function under United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) regulations. Individuals in this position are subject to the terms and conditions set forth in OGE Energy Corp.’s USDOT Drug Testing Plan.

• All positions in which driving is an essential function of the job, regardless if the job code is marked safety sensitive or not, will also be included as safety sensitive. Individuals in positions in which driving is an essential function are subject to the terms and conditions set forth in OGE Energy Corp.’s Drug Testing Plan.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAS)

• Ability to understand substations systems and equipment.

• Ability to read and interpret switching charts, one-line diagrams, electrical schematic and wiring diagrams, and all types of substation prints.

• Ability to learn relay and control installation, steel erection, work above ground level in steel structures, concrete finishing, carpentry work, and Construction Practices and Approved Work Methods applicable to Construction work.

• Ability to gain proficiency in the operation of mechanical equipment (e.g., hydra-lift trucks, bucket trucks, dump trucks, backhoes and other excavating equipment).

• Ability to gain proficiency in establishing locations and elevations of equipment foundations, curbs, and trenches in relation to established benchmarks.

• Ability to mentor less experienced company members in the safe assembly and installation of substation equipment in an energized substation.

• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and familiarity working with mechanical equipment.

• Ability to learn semi-skilled maintenance and manual tasks.

• Ability to communicate effectively in speech and writing.

• Ability to interact effectively and professionally with team members, leaders, and customers.

• Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose problems, and resolve effectively.

• Ability to understand and comply with company policies and operating procedures.

• Ability to use common purpose hand tools and other materials of various craft trades.

• Ability to work with minimal supervision, following approved work methods and standard testing practices.

• Basic computer skills with knowledge of MS Office Suite applications.

• Ability to learn safe working and operating procedures, safety requirements, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Knowledge of basic math.

• Ability to work under hazardous conditions where physical danger exists due to mechanical equipment.

• Ability to assess equipment operating conditions and make sound decisions during routine and emergency situations.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

• Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with DOT certification required or must obtain within 180 days of hire (Required)
