Your Role

As Senior Producer, Impact and Specialized Journalism, you co-ordinate and supervise the cross-platform impact and specialized journalism work of Ottawa-Gatineau reporters. Your bold, diligent leadership is needed to drive original, exclusive coverage of regional stories.

You support reporters in their efforts, helping them develop and maintain sources as well as cultivate ideas for exclusive reports. You apply your extensive knowledge of regional and national affairs to help your team craft stories from unexpected angles. You must develop newsgathering plans to serve audiences on regional and national platforms.

You may also be required to vet and edit reporters’ copy as needed.

Your role will be to consult, plan, assign and co-ordinate newsgathering resources to cover the most relevant and impactful stories. You must be flexible to adjust coverage when events warrant, and assist the assignment desk as needed, particularly in interpreting CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).

You must be able to engage your teams around the station’s editorial priorities. You must very open to new ideas, which you take on board to enrich content. Your sound management skills enable you to give useful feedback and help the team develop.

Key tasks:

  • Motivate reporters to pitch original stories.

  • Supervise reporters’ journalistic approach, from initial research through to final production.

  • Vet editorial copy.

  • Co-ordinate and work effectively with the news department to maintain a steady stream of stories in reporters’ areas of expertise.

  • Review the legal implications of contentious stories.

  • Interpret the JSP as it relates to investigative journalism.

  • File access-to-information requests.

  • Provide feedback and coaching to help reporters hone their impact journalism skills and develop expertise in their beats.

  • Develop complex newsgathering plans.

  • Post content to websites and social media platforms.

What you bring:

  • University degree or equivalent with seven (7) years’ experience, of which three (3) must involve work in broadcasting or a closely related industry, directly related to the area of assignment

  • Strong team leadership skills with the ability to inspire others

  • Superior writing, editorial, assignment and production skills; interest in cross-platform media production

  • Strong experience in impact or investigative journalism, or as a specialized reporter

  • Proven ability to develop sources and an effective workflow for managing journalism beats

  • Ability to choose relevant, audience-focused stories that reflect issues being discussed by the general public

  • Ability to quickly react and respond to breaking stories

  • Knowledge of events and issues in the Outaouais and Eastern Ontario

  • Demonstrated skills in the area of conflict resolution, mentoring, talent recognition and development

  • Ability to innovate and take risks

  • Flexibility with working hours that might include the possibility of overtime and rotating shifts to cover operational needs

  • A commitment to reflecting community and diversity

  • Thorough knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices

  • English is an asset
