RELIANCE STEEL & ALUMINUM CO. Sr. Health and Welfare Benefits Manager in Pasadena, California

This job is in the Human Resources family (Department). Manages and supervises all aspects of employee benefit programs, including health benefits and leave programs. Stays informed of new employee benefits related laws, regulations, and trends. Performs research and analysis, provides consultation, and makes recommendations to the Senior Manager, Benefits regarding benefits program design and policy development. Provides direct service to employees. The role has two staff members and reports directly to Senior Manager, of Benefits who provides oversight and general direction. Health and Welfare Benefits:

  • Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates the employee health and welfare programs, including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance plans, leave programs, and Flexible Benefits plans.
  • Stays informed of new employee benefits-related laws, regulations, and trends. Performs research and analysis related to benefit plans to assist in Union negotiations, plan maintenance and improvement and health benefits policy development.
  • Provides administrative management of benefit programs, including contributions to the working benefits committee. Partners with the Senior Manager, Benefits to ensure viable benefit offerings, including plan design, strategic planning, benefit forecasting, monitoring usage trends and directing broker negotiations with benefit carriers.
  • Oversees Affordable Care Act (ACA) compliance and reporting. Responsible for annual required reporting for the self-insured benefit programs.
  • Ensures appropriate and timely communications and employee education.
  • Advises upper management on health and welfare issues and trends to maintain affordable and appropriate benefits for employees and continuing compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Effectively manages relationships with third parties to ensure that agreed upon service levels are met and any issues are promptly addressed. Reviews benefit contracts for accuracy and monitors contracts to ensure compliance with negotiated terms and conditions.
  • Manages the self-insured industrial insurance program in accordance with relevant statutes related to industrial insurance. Selects and oversees third-party claims administration.
  • Manages legal issues in consultation with legal counsel. Retains outside legal counsel if necessary.
  • Manages the short-term leave program in accordance with federal and state laws.
  • Provides leadership and motivation to benefits staff. Participates in and recommends hire. Assigns and oversees work.
  • Participates in payroll software system maintenance and issue identification and resolution as it relates to benefits deductions and employer contributions.

  • All other duties and responsibilities assigned by management.

*ANNUAL SALARY: $160,000.00 - $175,000.00 / Depending on Experience *LOCATION: Los Angeles or Pasadena area - Working a minimum of three days per week in the Pasadena office

REQUIRED SKILLS


  • Education and Experience: bachelors degree with a minimum 10+ years related benefits experience.
  • All applicable employment and benefit laws and regulations especially those relating to health benefits, insurance.
  • Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to analyze data, understand trends, and develop recommendations based on analysis.
  • Facilitating mutually agreeable resolution to issues with both employees and management.
  • Oral and written communications; public presentations; interpersonal sensitivity; problem analysis and decision making; time and stress management.
  • Communication - Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of management and excel at team collaboration.
  • Technical Skills: Skills in analytics, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and ERP systems.
