SUMMARY

Performs basic office and field civil engineering tasks in design, drafting, or assists as a member of a field survey crew, assists with traffic studies, assists with the chip seal program, and performs other related functions to assist other employees in more complex duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

  • Performs basic, entry-level civil engineering tasks of a limited degree of complexity and with an element of trainee assignments performed under immediate supervision.
  • Works on a survey crew and assists in basic phases of survey work; takes notes in field books; may operate instruments and assist in other survey party functions for the purpose of training or temporary substitution for absent crew members.
  • Performs basic, preliminary route and bridge surveys, construction staking, slope states, blue topping, establishing property lines, section corners, reference points, and benchmarks.
  • Performs simple material testing, compaction tests and quantity measurements; makes basic mathematical calculations to determine materials required.
  • Assists engineering staff with traffic studies.
  • Assists in basic design and drafting projects, such as preparing plans of utility, location, and as-built construction projects; sketches maps and design drawings; plots survey data from hard copy to other drafting media.
  • Performs routine office engineering tasks to assist engineering staff in the research, preparation and collection of data for computer processing, county records, or studies.
  • Assists other Engineering Technicians in performing more complex projects and duties. Maintains computerized and manual records, logs and maps relating to assigned duties.
  • Assists Engineering and Road Maintenance staff with annual chip seal program.
  • Performs other duties in support of Public Works as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of the theory and practice of land and route surveying, highway design, and construction methods.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to learn to apply algebra, trigonometry, and engineering formulas related to highway construction and surveying.
  • Ability to accurately perform basic mathematical calculations required to complete work assignments.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret basic construction drawings and designs.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and keep accurate records.
  • Ability to learn to operate and use survey equipment, traffic study equipment, office equipment used in performing assigned duties.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
