Associated Fire Protection Fire Suppression Apprentice in Paterson, New Jersey

Associated Fire Protection, Inc. is looking for qualified candidates to place in the Associated Fire Protection Apprenticeship Program for Special Hazards Fire Suppression Technician. The apprenticeship program consists of two years of On-the-Job Training and Related Technical Instruction including the use of tools and equipment, National Fire Protection Association Standards, basic plan reading, basic wiring, principles of combustion, hazard analysis, detection and notification methods, area, volume and weight calculations as well as business communication, system testing methods, customer service and more.Skills developed during this apprenticeship will not only enable participants to work in the fire protection industry but will also provide them with skills that are directly transferable to other industries including plumbing, HVAC, and electronics.Apprentices will acquire knowledge to work as a fire protection technician with the ability to inspect, install, and service different forms of fire suppression systems.In addition, they will have a basic understanding of fire alarm panels and notification systems including related devices.Job Specific Functions- including but not limited to:Work alongside experienced technicians while assisting in the inspection, installation, and servicing of fire protection systems.Evaluate and determine whether equipment is operating as expected; troubleshooting skills; equipment maintenance; repairing; installation; communication skills; critical thinking skills; active learning skills; time management; computer skills.Complete inspection reports and other work orders, submit on a timely basis.Follow safety procedures, ensure all work is being done in accordance with safety policies and procedures as well as code compliance.Become familiar with NFPA, state and local regulatory codes.Attend and participate in classroom instruction and assessments.Pull materials for jobs as required.General Functions: This position includes a lot of interaction with customers and coworkers. The successful candidate must be able to communicate effectively and enjoy collaboration with others.The successful candidate should read and be aligned with company’s mission statement, vision and values.Depending on skill level, the successful candidate must be able to manage, lead and mentor peopleKeep appointments and show up to work on time.RequirementsQualifications, Experience and Education- including but not limited to:Must have basic mechanical or electrical skills, or other related experience.Must be able to procure COF's and additional licenses, certifications as required.Capable of performing physical labor to include carrying and moving equipment and tools up to 50-70 lbs. Able to work in unusual and sometimes difficult position such as climbing ladders, scaffolding and high lift equipment up to 40 feet, working within ducts, crawl spaces, above ceilings, etc, with or without reasonable accommodation. Experience working with fire protection and suppression equipment is preferredMust be able to perform simple tasks independently after being given assignments.Customer service skills.Computer literate.Ability to read blueprints.Well organized, self motivated, flexible and a team player.Valid drivers license and must be able to get to and from job sites.Attitude and actions are in line with company’s mission statement, vision and values.Must be able to understand and comply with the company’s safety and employment policies.Must be able to work flexible hours and overtime as needed.Emergency Service shifts are a requirement for this job.
