USAA Director, Trial Attorney BI/UM (Hybrid) in Phoenix, Arizona
Purpose of Job
USAA is currently seeking a talented Director, Trial Attorney for our Phoenix, Arizona Staff Counsel law office.

In this position you will lead a team that provides legal representation to protect the financial security of USAA members, insured clients and USAA entities in all phases of civil litigation and legal proceedings. Exercises discretion and judgment to ensure that matters are resolved efficiently.

Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.
Handles insurance defense cases through arbitration trial and possible appeal for clients on cases assigned.
Conducts direct settlement negotiations with plaintiffs' attorneys. May partner with other attorneys in trial preparation and during trial.
Provides legal advice, develops and implements legal strategy and ongoing budget projections to Claims Litigation, and clients, as appropriate on assigned cases.
Proactively identifies and manages existing and emerging risks. Follows written risk and compliance policies and procedures.
May also provide advice and handle matters not yet in litigation.
Prepares legal pleadings, motions, statements, memoranda, trial briefs and other legal documents on assigned cases. Takes and defends depositions.
Appears in court as the need arises, including arbitrations, trials and mediations.
Provides training to other attorneys, support staff, P&C Claims and Claims Litigation regarding changes in law, litigation and/or and other processes. May serve as a mentor and trainer to team members, including other attorneys and legal assistants.
Remains current on all relevant statutes, case law and trial-related technology. Attends courses as assigned to maintain appropriate skills for trial.
May assist with complex litigation cases.
Trains, coaches, mentors and develops employees including daily, monthly and quarterly coaching.
Responsible for case load distribution, workflow adjustments and day to day operations within the office.
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited school.
Juris Doctor degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school required.
Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction(s) served.
Active member and in good standing of the bar in at least one state or territory.
8 years of proven experience practicing law handling personal injury or civil litigation or trial cases.
3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Tools.
Ability to perform online legal research.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Experience as an Attorney in charge when Managing Trial Attorney is not present.
Experience leading projects within a staff counsel office.
Senior Trial Attorney or significant trial experience.
Experience mentoring junior Trial Attorneys.
Current Trial Attorney working in a Phoenix, Arizona staff counsel office.
USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market position. The salary range for this position is: $155,400 - $279,800.
Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance or at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
*Geographical Differential: Geographic pay differential is additional pay provided to eligible employees working in locations where market pay levels are above the national average.
Shift premium will be addressed on an individual basis for applicable roles that are consistently scheduled for non-core hours.
