Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Under the direct clinical supervision of a pathologist/pathologists’ assistant performs all technical aspects of labeling and dictating of biopsies, routine and non-complex specimens using established protocols and according to hospital and laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Performs other routine technical and general laboratory procedures in grossing and frozen section areas, maintaining a clean, stocked and organized laboratory space as directed and according to policy.

  • Assist pathologists with frozen section as needed.

  • Organizes and is responsible for surgical specimen storage and disposal. Maintains area in a clean and organized fashion.

  • Disposes biohazardous and chemical waste, including neutralizing formalin, maintains chemical waste storage area in accordance with all hospital, local, state and federal guidelines.

  • Provides routine maintenance and chemical changes for pathology equipment, including responsibility for tissue processor routines and maintenance logs.

  • Provides secondary support for histology functions such as microtomy and embedding when necessary.

  • Serves as a backup to the lab assistants including: registration and accessioning, retrieving specimens from different areas of the hospital, assist in discrepancy/problem resolution, preparation of cytology specimens.

  • Responsible for monitoring supply levels and record keeping.

  • Provides assistance with Quality Assurance Program.

  • Training of new employees.

  • Maintain a safe working environment.

  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Written and verbal skills in English at a college graduate level.

  • Must qualify for high complexity testing according to the CAP, specifically for grossing.

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (meeting CAP minimums for credit distribution for high complexity testing).

  • Pathology lab experience of 2 years or more and successful completion of pathology test.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

This job requires frequent bending, carrying, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, walking and lifting over 10 lbs. There will be occasional need for climbing stairs, lifting in excess of 50 – 100 lbs and sitting. Constant use of hearing, sight and speech. Frequent use of smell and touch. Frequent keyboard and telephone use. Constant concentration and problem solving.
