The Senior Storage Engineer will play a crucial role within the Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) department and is responsible for supporting an ecosystem of large-scale storage clusters shaping the backbone of the University’s complex research endeavors. This role will collaborate with engineers and developers from the Office of Information Technology (OIT), Research Computing, the Library, and peer departments across campus to help them to achieve their goals. With a focus on innovation and teamwork, the Engineer will play an integral role in deploying and managing infrastructure across four data centers in Princeton.

This role reports to the Director of Compute, Storage, Backup and Automation within OIT. The OIT organization provides services that enable Princeton University to achieve its mission to advance learning through scholarship, research, and teaching of unsurpassed quality. The EIS department within the central OIT organization architects, engineers and operates the campus-wide IT infrastructure services that support the University’s mission.

Responsibilities

Storage Engineering & Projects

  • * Lead the planning, implementation, and execution of upgrades and patching for file and object storage infrastructure, ensuring minimal downtime, compatibility with existing systems, and adherence to security best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • * Collaborate with partners across campus, including Research Computing and the Library to:
    • Define multi-year roadmaps.
    • Administrate 70PB of storage architecture.
    • Develop strategies for campus-wide data and storage services based on current and future University needs and upcoming technologies.
  • * Develop and execute scripts or REST API functions to automate bulk tasks on storage and backup technologies into other IT platforms.
  • * Assist teams to develop and execute test and implementation plans for validating changes to new platforms, features, or firmware changes.
  • * Ensure compliance with asset, change, incident, and problem management processes and policies.

Storage Support & Operations

  • * Manage and optimize Princeton’s central file storage infrastructure at local data centers to ensure high availability, reliability, and performance for critical business operations, including configuration, monitoring, capacity planning, and troubleshooting.
  • * Collaborate with cross-functional teams to manage separate infrastructure components while focusing on file and object storage systems, ensuring seamless integration, efficient resource utilization, and effective communication to support overall organizational objectives.
  • * Work with external technical personnel to implement hardware/software upgrades and remedies remotely and onsite.
  • * Maintain confidential data in the strictest confidence and ensure privacy, security, and proper use in accordance with University Information Security Policy

Professional Development

  • * Build technical expertise for self and staff in storage operations
  • * Learn the functions of new software products to facilitate migration to, and use of emerging technology
  • * Proactively participate in professional development opportunities to continuously develop administrative and technical skills
Qualifications

Essential Qualifications

  • * 7 years of experience in file storage technologies from Dell/EMC’s PowerScale/Isilon
  • * 3 years of experience in object storage technologies from Dell ECS, IBM COS, or other similar clusters
  • * Thorough understanding of storage design, specification, and testing methodologies
  • * Proficiency in deploying and managing onsite storage hardware infrastructure components, including physical servers, virtual machines, storage arrays, and networking equipment
  • * Experience with providing excellent customer support to end users at all levels of an organization
  • * Experience in scripting (Python, Bash, Powershell or similar) and automating tasks in Linux, Windows, or other storage native platforms
  • * Proven ability to diagnose and remediate complex server/client connectivity issues
  • * Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work-related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • * Understanding of ITIL framework
  • * Experience in a Higher Education setting
  • * Experience with Enterprise Backup technologies (Veeam, Cohesity, Rubrik or similar)
  • * Experience with Hyper Converged and/or Hypervisor technologies (VMware, AHV, Hyper-V or similar)
  • * Familiarity with Arcitecta MediaFlux
  • * Familiarity with Cloud-based architecture (AWS, GCP, Azure, Wasabi, OCI, or similar)
  • * Familiarity with Agile framework
