Brown University Manager of Finance and Administration in Providence, Rhode Island

Job Description:

Summary:

The Manager of Finance and Administration directs key elements of the department research administration and financial administrative work in the Department of Neuroscience. This position will provide expertise in grant administration by providing high-level research administration management support to the department manager and department chair.

Duties include compliance, understanding regulations related to grants, problem-solving while addressing grants management, budgetary/financial planning and analysis, payroll reconciliation, purchasing approvals, control of the department and auxiliary accounts, management of the effort certification process, processing of salary reallocations and costings, and financial planning support to the Department Manager and Department Chair. This position manages and supervises a staff of approximately four individuals (Grants and Financial Specialists and Grant and Ginancial Coordinators). This position will act on behalf of the Department Manager in their absence and will have signatory authority on sponsored and non-sponsored financial documents on behalf of the Department Manager.

Job Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • bachelor's degree and 5-7 years of research administration and grant management experience, preferably in an academic setting or equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Experience in grant accounting

  • Proven accounting skills/experience, including the ability to analyze and reconcile accounts

  • Experience with managing staff

  • Knowledge of federal and private research funding organizations and proposal requirements

  • Preferred: Direct experience in financial management (including budget management, reporting, financial modeling, and financial analysis), policy implementation.

  • Preferred: Experience using grant management database (i.e.Coeus)

Job Competencies:

  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills and the ability to prioritize own workload and workload of others

  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Filemaker

  • Excellent interpersonal/communication skills

  • Effective customer service skills

  • File and database management skills

  • Willingness and ability to continue to learn

  • Must be able to shift focus and priority in pressure environment

  • Must be able to work with large volumes of work, multiple project deadlines, and diverse personalities.

  • Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
