Role Definition

Analyzes and develops transportation plans to control the movement of commodities throughout a manufacturing or distribution network to ensure the smooth running of operations at optimal transportation cost levels.

Responsibilities

• Analyzing transportation plans and identifying opportunities for improvements to meet client needs.

• Implementing and maintaining monitoring systems to provide information on shipment status, shipped date, in transit location, estimated arrival date, and actual delivery date.

• Generating and analyzing reports of transportation costs, carrier performance and lead times.

• Assisting in the development of process flows to track lead time by activity and providing solutions to reduce lead times.

Transportation - PHA: Knowledge of and experience with the means of transporting materials and goods to and from suppliers, distribution centers, manufacturing facilities and customers the manufacturing facility.

Level Working Knowledge:

• Works with at least one type of transportation mode and carrier.

• Ensures on time shipments; anticipates and resolves shipping problems.

• Describes common costs and associated billing and freight payment procedures.

• Describes pros and cons of different types of domestic transportation alternatives.

• Recounts process for issuing bids and analyzing responses from carriers.

Logistics Management: Knowledge of the processes, tools and operational considerations for effective and efficient movement of goods and materials; ability to understand, predict and control the movement of goods, materials and supplies.

Level Basic Understanding:

• Documents internal and external informative sources or proprietary materials about logistics management.

• Describes basic logistical processes and sub-processes.

• Explains how improvements in logistics contribute to competitive advantage in the marketplace.

• Identifies issues and considerations for inbound and outbound logistics.

Supply Chain Management: Knowledge of functions, principles and techniques used in supply chain management; ability to develop and implement strategies, practices and tools for controlling the whole processes.

Level Basic Understanding:

• Identifies goals and objectives of effective supply chain management.

• Describes major areas associated with supply chain management.

• Cites multiple examples of waste, high costs and inefficiencies associated with supply chains.

• Locates and interprets walk-throughs of the consumption stream and associated provision stream.
