POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the section Supervisor, the Lab Clinical Support Tech III will perform laboratory support activities, pre and post analytical support activities such as specimen pending management, quality assurance, document management, administrative support, and general laboratory maintenance/inventory coordination. Exercises limited independent judgment and problem-solving skills. Serves as a primary resource to laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling, processing and pre and post testing troubleshooting.

SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Under supervision of the Assistant Supervisor, Chemistry Supervisor and Chief Supervisor. May also take direction from the Director, or from the Section Medical Technologists in the absence of the section Supervisor.

MACHINES AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Standard office equipment such as multi-feature telephone, PC, copier, printer, scanner, fax machine, and the like. Software systems such as Laboratory Information System (LIS), Hospital Information System (HIS), and related laboratory specific software applications. Laboratory equipment may include familiarity with general laboratory equipment such as refrigerators/freezers, timers, thermometers and other equipment applicable to the laboratory section. In addition, familiarity with instrumentation/reagents, limited to, testing support activities where independent technical judgement is not needed.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Lab (Technical) Support (35%)

  • Maintains equipment and environmental temperature and duty charts. Monitors water quality. Conducts initial assessment and works with technical team and Supervisor to trouble shoot out of range conditions and documents all corrective actions.

  • Participates in quality monitors and initiatives. Compiles data and performs internal quality checks to facilitate smooth and accurate operations.

  • Performs equipment maintenance and quality control for non- analytical instrumentation.

  • Works with laboratory technologists to triage and troubleshoot test system problems. Provides problem resolution for a variety of pre and post analytical instruments, such as centrifuges, water baths and refrigerator/freezers.

  • Independently follows up on problems and discrepancies as needed and consults appropriate medical technologist for assistance.

  • Generates daily or monthly reports using various software applications to include, but not limited to, Aeroscout Mobileview Wireless Temp Monitoring, BioRad Unity, eRecord, Soft Lab.

  • Stocks reagents.

2. Specimen Management (35%)

  • Performs all duties associated with specimen pending management, which may include centrifugation, and storing of samples. Also, includes follow up on discrepancies with patient information, requesting physician, recorded results and account numbers.

  • Uses advanced knowledge of specimen requirements and stability and knowledge of test menu to prioritize handling of stat/urgent specimens and those needing special handing.

  • Provide Monthly support for monthly bias testing and reagent lot to lot management

3. Administrative Support (30%)

  • Receives incoming telephone calls and triages calls to appropriate laboratory as necessary. Manages requests for faxed results and provides specimen requirements and stability information. Provides results to physician offices and health centers as necessary.

  • Takes appropriate action as needed to meet the customer’s request, including management of test request add-on’s and proper transfer of calls to other destinations as needed.

  • Maintains department forms in Medialab.

  • Maintains initial training information and competency document management.

  • Participates in Quality Assurance data collection as required.

  • Assists inventory operations.

  • Provides general administrative support for needs such as facility requests, mail, file management, and specimen mailers.

4. Performs other responsibilities and projects as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :

Associate’s degree or some college level course work in science or a related discipline and one year of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, experience or certification. Customer Service experience preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology a plus.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $20.11 - $27.15 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
