GENERAL PURPOSE:

The Central Service Educator is responsible for the development, implementation and monitoring of staff development, orientation and annual competency programs relative to sterile processing. The Educator creates and coordinates the delivery of education, competencies and training programs to assure sterile processing operations are standardized across the URM system. This includes the processing of supplies, equipment and instrumentation, performing cleaning and sterilization duties, and preparing surgical packs, supplies and instrumentation for use in the operating rooms, clinics, and inpatient care areas.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Under general direction and with latitude for independent judgment:

  2. Creates and delivers curriculum related to appropriate Sterile Processing technique and regulation. Stays abreast of developing trends, regulation and requirement (state and federal).

  3. Develops and facilitates training and orientation for new staff and continued education for current staff.

  4. Designs, develops implements and monitors educational programs for URM system as a subject matter expert in decontamination, instrument assembly, and sterilization the educator. Acts as a liaison to clinics and areas where sterilization and high level disinfection of equipment is performed.

  5. Collects, and interprets statistical data on the progress and success of the educational programs based on quality performance reports. Utilizes data to improve departmental employee certification quotas.

  6. Creates and standardizes skills assessment in regards to the care of instrument and equipment processing. Orients and monitor staff through the orientation process. Documents progress and monitors corrective action with follow up outcome of improvement.

  7. Monitors instrument tracking reports and the events reporting system. Performs root cause analysis for areas identified as deficient and makes recommendations on resolution as well as developing training materials to aid in reduction of future defects.

  8. Develops programs to monitor infections prevention practices including but not limited to ATP testing procedure of instruments, tracking immediate use sterilization. Prepares reports and represents URM sterile processing practices at the monthly infection prevention committee meeting.

  9. Works collaboratively with perioperative nursing, clinic QA liaisons and infection preventionists to educate in the approved practices for sterilization and high level disinfection of equipment and instrumentation.

  10. Participate in infection prevention rounds.

  11. Collaborates and develops action plans for reduction of surgical site infection.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration or Health Care Management and 2-3 years supervisory experience in a hospital setting; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Certified as a Central Service technician or a Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician within six months of hire.

  • Master's degree preferred.
