University of Rochester Laboratory Technician III (S) in Rochester, New York
Responsibilities
Position Summary:
A Technician III position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Shu-Chi (Allison) Yeh’s Lab in the Center for Musculoskeletal Research, the Department of Orthopaedics at University of Rochester Medical Center. The job consists of laboratory work using mouse models, live-animal fluorescence imaging, cell culture systems and molecular biology techniques to understand the protective microenvironment in the bone marrow that shelters healthy and malignant blood stem cells. This position requires some prior experience with mouse colony management, mouse recovery surgery (calvarial skin incision), tissue harvest and sample processing (preparation of mouse tissues for flow cytometry or single cell RNA sequencing analyses), molecular biology skills (PCR, gel electrophoresis, mouse genotyping, etc.), cell culture skills (mammalian cell culture, staining), experience in data analysis/interpretation (e.g., Image J for image processing), and fluorescence imaging. Experiences in image processing and fluorescence imaging are optional, but these are skillsets that will be acquired when working on the project together. Hours of the position are 8:00am – 5:00pm Monday through Friday (flexible), work on limited weekends may be required.
Specific Responsibilities:
Ordering of lab supplies when needed (10% effort).
Mouse colony management and genotyping (10% effort).
Sample preparation for live-animal imaging, including sorting and staining normal blood or leukemic stem cells (Cell sorting will be assisted with the flow cytometry core) (20%).
Intravenous injection of normal blood or leukemic stem cells to mice, and performing surgical procedures such as calvarial skin incision and re-suturing for longitudinal live-animal imaging. Training for live animal imaging will be provided by the mentor (20% effort).
Harvesting cells or tissue from skull, long bones, or peripheral blood for downstream analyses such as flow cytometry, bulk or single cell RNA sequencing, real time quantitative PCR, immunocytochemistry and microscopy, respectively, with assistance from the core facilities. (20%)
Maintenance of a detailed lab notebook with experimental detail, methods, data compilation and data analysis and interpretation included. (20%)
Requirements:
Associate's degree in appropriate discipline (e.g. biology, biomedical engineering), plus 2-3 years specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
A bachelor’s degree and some laboratory research experiences are required. Prior experience in fluorescence imaging and image analysis is a plus. This position offers opportunities for lab management and co-authorship on published manuscripts. Pay Range
Pay Range: $19.96 - $27.94 Hourly
The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job.
