Responsibilities

Job Description

The Newborn Hearing Screener performs newborn hearing screenings on inpatient newborns at Strong Memorial Hospital and/or Highland Hospital using electrophysiological tests including evoked otoacoustic emissions and/or automated auditory brainstem response evaluations.

Responsibilities and Distribution of Time

The Newborn Hearing Screener must assess the daily patient volume (10%), prioritize test recipients (10%), check the calibration of test equipment (5%), perform hearing screenings both in the mothers’ rooms as well as in newborn nursery areas (20%), evaluate test outcomes (10%), document test result information in the infants’ medical record (10%), communicate test results with nurses, physicians and other appropriate hospital staff (5%), schedule outpatient re-screening appointments (5%), manage test data using computer database software (10%), distribute test reports to pediatricians (10%), triage equipment problems (5%) and follow all appropriate Strong Memorial Hospital and/or Highland Hospital patient-care policies and procedures.

Supervision

The Newborn Hearing Screener reports directly to the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program Coordinator. Additionally, they may request support directly from the Director of Audiology.

Equipment Used

The Newborn Hearing Screener must understand and be expert in the use of computer-based hearing screening software (Otodynamics EZ-Screen, Bio-Logic ABAER), computer database software (RBASE) and Windows-based office programs including MS Outlook and Word.

Job Requirements

The preferred candidate for the Newborn Hearing Screener position will have a B.A. or B.S. degree and three years of work experience, or a comparable combination of education and work experience, must be willing to accept a flexible work schedule based upon patient volume, must be willing to work some weekends and holidays, must be able to push an AV cart and lift newborn infants, must possess excellent communication skills and must complete a minimum of forty hours of job-specific training provided by the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening Program Coordinator and/or the Department of Audiology.
