Responsibilities

General Description:

As part of an interdisciplinary team, the Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) would responsible for providing assessment, treatment, and education for individuals with acquired impairments in the areas of communication, cognition, and swallowing for both pediatric and adult acute care populations once the initial orientation, training and certification process were completed. The purpose of the CFY-SLP position is to enable the recently graduated SLP to gain their clinical competence certification (CCC)

Required Competencies:

  • SLP must hold Master’s degree from an accredited training institution

  • SLP must maintain ability to pass required mandatory in-service and staff competency training, including FIM administration.

  • SLP must maintain current knowledge in speech-language, cognitive, and dysphagia assessment and rehabilitation through ongoing continuing education.

Expectations Skills and Duties to be Acquired:

  1. The SLP will provide a battery of formal and informal assessments to evaluate patient’s candidacy and prognosis for treatment in the following areas:

  2. Motor Speech Disorders

  3. Communication with tracheostomy tube dependency

  4. Voice disorders

  5. Acquired language disorders

  6. Cognitive-linguistic disorders

  7. Adult swallowing disorders

  8. Pediatric swallowing disorders

  9. The SLP will design and implement an appropriate plan of care for treatment and revisions to meet a patient’s individual needs.

  10. The SLP will complete in a timely fashion documentation regarding the provision of SLP services to be included in the patient’s medical record, patient/family education record, FIM score booklet, SLP soft chart, Provider Portal, and daily billing record.

  11. The SLP will assist in the education of health professionals, patients, families, and community members about communication, cognitive, and/or swallowing disorders.

  12. The SLP will actively participate in interdisciplinary team conferences, team scheduling, family meetings, and discharge planning meetings, as well as initiate discussions regarding interdisciplinary team goals.

  13. The SLP will facilitate continuity of care by referring appropriate patients for on-going SLP service delivery through outpatient and home health agencies.

  14. The SLP will participate in program development and provide continuing education training sessions for 51200 staff.

Long Range Goals:

  • Provide the highest quality of acute care for Speech Therapy, using state-of-the-art practices and current standards of care.

  • Increase revenue generated by SLP service on each of the acute care floors now being serviced by increasing frequency and intensity of service for appropriate patients.

  • To improve patient functional outcomes and level of independence prior to discharge.

  • To provide efficient and effective communication and swallowing treatment across the continuum of care, from the acute setting to inpatient rehabilitation, to community re-entry and outpatient.

  • To expand the SLP’s role in cognitive rehabilitation as member of the interdisciplinary team.

Short Term Goals:

  1. Enable the Department to increase the volume of patients receiving SLP services on the rehabilitation unit.

  2. Develop skills in the screening and evaluation patients admitted for acute rehabilitation with new diagnosis of CVA, for speech, language, cognition, dysphagia, post-surgical and/or respiratory impairments.

  3. Participate in in-service training regarding cognitive-linguistic disorders to health professionals.

  4. Participate in increasing the frequency and intensity of SLP service on the acute care floors and rehabilitation unit.

  • Goal of 2 SLP sessions daily, per patient. Patients’ schedules will be customized to accommodate individual needs, per discussion at initial team meeting.

  • Implement group therapy approach for treatment where appropriate

  • Expand the quality of diagnostic and treatment approaches with use of instrumental tools after suitable instruction

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 17.36 - $ 23.44 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
