Job Overview

Jensen Hughes is seeking a Hazardous Materials Code Consultant to join our Mid-Atlantic Team with offices in Maryland and Virginia. We are open to other locations and remote work for candidates having demonstrated experience and capability. A successful candidate will demonstrate ability to perform or direct engineering consulting services pertaining to hazardous materials use and storage. We are seeking applications from candidates at the mid-level or senior-level career stage. This market segment is a key growth area for our company and offers opportunities for increasing industry engagement, business development and mentorship of emerging professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform engineering work associated with storage and use of flammable and combustible liquids, flammable gases, oxidizers, toxics, corrosives and other hazardous materials

  • Serve as a technical project management contact with clients regarding requests for proposals, contracting, deliverables, invoicing, etc.

  • Conduct site inspections to observe existing operations at client facilities, perform fire and life safety code compliance reviews, provide engineering equivalency evaluations for a variety of occupancies and recommend additions/revisions to client plans and procedures

  • Apply engineering judgment to consider solutions not addressed by codes and standards and prepare technical justification for code variance requests

  • Conduct fire hazard analyses (FHAs) for unique, high-hazard and high-value industrial and manufacturing facilities

  • Identify opportunities for performance-based design and develop design basis documents and operational specifications to mitigate hazards

  • Prepare written reports for hazardous material code compliance work and provide QA/QC for similar reports prepared by colleagues

  • Support negotiation and implementation of insurance loss control recommendations

  • Develop research proposals to investigate safety hazards associated with storage and use of hazardous materials in arrangements not addressed by existing codes and regulations

  • Prepare hazardous materials inventory statements, hazardous materials management plans and similar documentation to fulfill requirements of codes, regulations or insurance carriers

  • Develop and execute business development plans for clients, markets and sectors related to hazardous material code consulting

Requirements and Qualifications

  • All candidates should possess the following qualifications.

  • High-level written and oral communication skills to write reports, business correspondence, presentations, etc.

  • Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college and 5+ years of related experience

  • Ability to travel up to 30% for project work

  • Ability to support multiple projects and effectively share workload with colleagues across regional and service line boundaries to fulfill client expectations

  • Demonstrated knowledge of engineering practices, fire and building codes and industry standards applying to hazardous materials use and storage, including:

  • International Building Code

  • International Fire Code and NFPA 1

  • NFPA codes/standards pertaining to occupancies involving hazardous materials facility design, commissioning and operations, including but not limited to NFPA 30 and 400

  • Insurer guidelines such as FM Global DatasheetsWe are especially interested in candidates with the following additional qualifications.

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in the fields of chemical engineering, fire protection engineering or mechanical engineering

  • Professional Engineer (PE/P.Eng.), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Institute of Safety and Health Management (ISHM) or comparable certification

  • Knowledge of U.S. federal regulations and standards pertaining to hazardous materials, including DOT, OSHA, EPA, etc.
