JOB SUMMARY

Indigenous Archaeology Specialist will work in the HU Center for Anthropological Services (HUCAS) assisting cultural surveys, archaeology, and burial recovery projects, providing instruction and guidance over matters involving cultural practices, traditional knowledge, and Minnesota Indian cultural history.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively with other HUCAS staff on research and service projects including project design, analysis, interpretation, and management.

  • Advise HUCAS staff on appropriate practices for the archaeological research and burial recovery work

  • Advise HUCAS staff on cultural and spiritual needs of the HUCAS repository and field sites.

  • Work collaboratively with HUCAS staff during field work including cultural studies, pedestrian surveys, cemetery authentication, mound monitoring and burial recoveries.

  • All other duties as requested.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This position reports to the: Director of HUCAS This position does not supervise other employees.

This position does not supervise student workers.

BUDGET MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for the following budget: N/A

Budget Range: This position is not responsible for the management of a budget.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge of Dakota/Anishinaabe/Indigenous history, culture, and traditions.

  • Experience with appropriate ceremonies and cultural practices needed for research and burial recovery work.

  • Experience with teaching and advising on cultural matters.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Training and education in Dakota/Anishinaabe/Indigenous practices related to history, culture, and traditions.

  • 5 years experience with appropriate ceremonies and cultural practices needed for research and burial recovery work.

  • 5 years of experience working in cultural heritage fields.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • 10 years of experience with appropriate ceremonies and cultural practices needed for research and burial recovery work.

  • 10 years of experience working in cultural heritage fields

REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION

  • None

WORKING CONDITIONS / EQUIPMENT

Must perform the following essential functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:

  • Ability to travel on and off campus locations.

  • Ability to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.

  • Ability to work an on-call schedule.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • This is a on-call, part-time, non-exempt, contract/grant-funded position.

  • This position may require flexibility in work schedule including night and weekend availability.

  • This position may require travel within the state and overnight stays near work sites.
