Compass Family Services People and Culture Manager in San Francisco, California

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco's homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Salary range: $75,000 - $90,000 annually

Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, primarily during standard business hours

Location: 37 Grove Street, San Francisco. Fully in-person for the first three months, then option to work remotely one day per week.

Responsibilities:

The People and Culture Manager ensures that Compass staff have the resources and training they need to do their jobs well. They work closely with the HR Director and HR Assistant to make sure that our Human Resources processes run smoothly, that everyone's questions get answered, and that we maintain compliance with policies and regulations. They also lead our Performance Management efforts and develop staff trainings on HR-related topics.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Assess organizational training needs and plan, develop, and deliver trainings to staff.

  • Guide and partner with managers across the agency in all areas of performance management.

  • In partnership with the rest of the HR team, navigate HR-related challenges that arise in supporting Compass employees.

  • Act as lead organization contact for leaves and accommodation requests.

  • Manage administrative elements of Compass' HR processes, for example: tracking Worker's Compensation requests, overseeing semi-annual “Safety Month” activities, tracking completion of performance evaluations, doing salary surveys, updating the employee manual, running DMV pull notices, and other related responsibilities.

  • Assist in employee benefit programs, including enrolling new hires, collecting, and tracking all benefits paperwork, building and maintaining relationships with vendors, and conducting new-hire benefit orientations.

  • Serve as a welcoming and available resource for any Compass employee who has questions about their benefits, Compass' HR policies, or related topics.

  • Ensure compliance with Compass' internal HR policies and with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations.

  • Scrupulously maintain confidentiality in employee matters.

Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of Human Resources and benefits administration experience.

  • Previous experience in development and delivery of trainings.

  • Strong understanding of employment law (local, state, and federal) and HR practices.

  • Knowledge of and experience with varied HR databases and systems.

  • Extremely thorough, accurate, organized, reliable, able to work independently and willing to ask necessary questions.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, conflict resolution and respect for confidentiality.

  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Salary: $75,000-$90,000 annually.

  • Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, increasing to 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.

  • Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.

  • Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-5.

Location and Covid safety:

  • Office location: 37 Grove St., less than a block from Civic Center BART/MUNI station

  • This is primarily an on-site role, with the option to work remotely one day per week after the first three months

  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
