At AVS, our medical staff consists of board-certified specialists in surgery, oncology, internal medicine, cardiology, and dentistry in addition to a skilled and experienced group of emergency veterinarians. We are proud of the doctors we have appointed to provide you and your pet the highest level of care possible.

The Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society accredited Advanced Veterinary Specialists as a Level II Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Facility in January 2015. Only two veterinary hospitals in California have received the Level II distinction, and one of them is AVS!

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • 2+ years of clinical experience in the veterinary industry, surgery experience is strongly preferred

  • RVT licensure preferred but not required

  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively interface with staff and clients using tact, patience, professional courtesy, and exhibit confidentiality and discretion where appropriate

  • Consistent and reliable ability to perform mathematical calculations for drug doses, CRIs, client invoices and estimates, and other position-related calculations

  • Maintain the California Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP); must obtain within 60-days of hire or transfer into this role; (this requirement is waived if incumbent holds a valid CA-RVT license)

Main duties and basic skills needed:

  • Provide compassionate patient care

  • Exercise a high level of communication with clients and referral partners

  • Accurately performs routine, in-house laboratory procedures, including the collection, preparation, and handling of all specimens according to hospital protocols

  • Ability to articulate professional veterinary verbiage while maintaining a medical record

  • A strong knowledge base of medical treatments including but not limited to; CRI setup/maintenance, NG tubes, central line placement, glucose curves, post-surgical care, oxygen-dependent patients, etc.

  • Accurately evaluate a patient’s ventilation, oxygenation and acid/base status utilizing pulse oximetry, capnography and arterial blood gas results

  • Aid in receiving with sedated procedures as needed

  • Discuss with surgeon about post-op medications needed for patient in-hospital and to go home

  • Assist pack/prep staff as needed, including shave patients for surgical prep as needed, Sterile surgical prep as needed, cleaning instruments, packing instruments, running autoclaves and gas sterilizer, pulling instruments

  • Restock and clean all areas of surgery department daily and replace sodasorb in all anesthesia machines weekly

  • Must be exemplary in customer service, critical thinking, team-oriented attitude

  • Some Weekend and Holiday Availability Required

  •   Perks:

  • Compensation range $18.00 - $35.00 hourly. The actual rate offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. 

  • $5,000 Sign-On Bonus
