Guthrie Patient Care Partner-Pulmonary/Palliative Unit-Full Time WKND in Sayre, Pennsylvania

Position Summary: Provides general support tasks (clinical and non‐clinical) for assigned patient care area. Works with other members of the patient care team to deliver care to specific patient populations. In addition, the Care Partner will maintain competency for population specific groups with consideration of physical, communication, safety, nutrition, and psychosocial needs.

Experience: Must have successfully completed a CNA training course, minimum of 1 year experience in a nurse aide role, or be currently enrolled in a licensed nurse program and have successfully completed a fundamentals of nursing course.

Essential Functions: Participates in the delivery of patient care for population specific groups under the direction of an RN including but not limited to the following: • Safe lifting, turning, and positioning patients • Observing confused and difficult patients • AM Hygiene care • PM Hygiene care • Toileting, shaving, washing, brushing hair, dental and mouth care • Feeding • Assisting with range of motion exercises • Safely mobilizing patients ‐ transfers and ambulation • Exercise protocols • Discontinuing foley catheter • Simple dressing changes • Incentive spirometry supervision • Surgical preps • Post mortem care • Administers cleansing and fleets enemas • Removal of peripheral IV catheters Performs and records accurately: • Temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, heights and weights • I & O • Records bowel movements • Meals • ADLs and activities Performs and records the following specimen collection: • Obtains urine, stool, and sputum specimens for patients; instructs patients in proper specimen collection technique. • Point of care (POC) testing based on Unit needs • Actively participates in and documents quality controls on all procedures as required in testing protocol. Completes the following support activities. • Completes EKGs • Transports patients as needed • Serves, sets up and retrieves trays • Distributes water pitchers as appropriate • Orders and distributes nourishment. • Performs errands in a timely manner including but not limited to the following: ? Transport beds to OR ? Make photocopies ? Transports blood products to and from the patient care area. Participates in patient safety/patient satisfaction. • Answers call bells promptly • Makes rounds to check on patient hourly • Reports any signs of abuse promptly • Recognizes, troubleshoots and initiates corrective action needed on equipment • Maintains neat and tidy environment (empties laundry, delivers equipment, keeps patient rooms clean and safe). • Inventories and assures disposition of patients' belongings when admitted, transferred, and/or discharged. • Safe Patient Handling Equipment is to be used for any lift/transfer/repositioning task above 35 pounds. • Maintains inventory of patient care area specific supplies • Assures proper storage of equipment. • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates plan of action . • Notifies RN of any changes seen in patient’s condition as well as any results of POC testing Complies with policies and procedures of the hospital/nursing department. • Supports the philosophy of the hospital and department of nursing. • Represents the hospital to patients/families and health care team in a professional, courteous manner while being sensitive to how others perceive both verbal and non‐verbal communications. • Maintains CPR certification and practice (CPR 100% required as of 7/1/2011). • Demonstrates cost‐effective patient care by demonstrating proper use and care of equipment, appropriate and prudent use of supplies, accurate charging of supplies; performing other division‐specific tasks, and appropriate utilization of available resources. • Demonstrates initiative in completing work that needs to be done as defined in the employee’s areas of responsibility. • Participates in performance improvement activities to improve service and care.

Other Duties: Assists in the orientation of new personnel and serves as a role model to other employees. Utilizes time between patient care to maintain clean and orderly work environment and help with other duties. Demonstrates willingness to accept non‐routine work assignments as appropriate. Encouraged to participate in community activities Is authorized to access secured storage areas in the performance of essential job functions and duties. Attends and participates in Unit Council meetings (70% attendance).
