The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 in our Molecular Diagnostic Division.

WORK SCHEDULE

  • Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory OR equivalent education/experienceAND

  • Current Medical Laboratory Scientist certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory divisionAND

  • Two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 or equivalent experience. PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs various PCR tests for the identification of bacteria, yeast and parasite in the Molecular Diagnostic Division per laboratory protocols.

  • Rotates and maintains competency in all sections where they have been trained.

  • Does DNA extraction by manual methods, sets up PCR reactions, real-time PCR reactions and DNA sequencing reactions.

  • Understands and operates a variety of molecular laboratory equipment’s (Qiacube and EZ2 DNA extractor, Qiagility liquid handler, ZAG DNA analyzer, 3130xl DNA sequencer, Illumina DNA sequencer, Biomek Nxp and 4000, Hamilton Star) and is able to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Exhibits a working knowledge of the laboratory information system software and can teach it to others.

  • Able to use Molecular database (mmdb) to enter data, print worksheets, analyze DNA sequences, and prepare case reports.

  • Able to use DNA analyzing software’s such as BLAST, BLAST2Tree and ClustalW.

  • Understands quality control requirements and follows policies to validate results.

  • Is able to work independently to manage average workloads and knows when to request assistance in case of heavier workloads.

  • Performs work accurately and precisely and recognize, corrects and documents errors when they occur.

  • Interacts with health care providers in a professional manner.

  • Knows what results are critical or reportable and follows the policies and procedures for reporting them to appropriate medical staff, epidemiology or Public Health Laboratory.

  • Assists with the evaluation of new tests/equipment and research projects as required.

  • Instructs new employees, medical laboratory students, medical students, residents and fellows in routine procedures and is patient and tolerant with them. The MLS 2 continues education and maintains certification by attending Lab Medicine seminars, in services, staff meetings and/or by reading scientific journals and participating in CAP proficiency surveys.

  • Assists the lead in teaching/training, organize and schedule in-service of new employees, medical laboratory scientist students, post-doctoral fellows and residents within the section and provide feedback on performance.

  • Performs inventory in assigned areas, unpacks, labels and puts away supplies taking care to rotate stock as needed. The MLS 2 lets the lead know well in advance when any item is getting low, helps organize the storage and proper labeling of chemicals and verifies that the records are current and complete. The MLS 2 assists the lead in ordering supplies so supplies arrive on time and to the correct location.

  • Develops bench assignments for a shift or section.

  • Communicates necessary/appropriate information to all MLS, leads and the manager.

  • Aware of the needs of co-workers and workload issues and helps others without being asked.
