EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Provides a comprehensive counseling program for students and specifically provides services to meet the needs of assigned students; consult with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance effectiveness in helping students; and to provide support to other educational programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Implements the District’s guidance curriculum through the delivery of classroom units and infusion in content areas. Articulates and applies a comprehensive school counseling philosophy.

Understands how students learn and develop, and applies that knowledge in practice. Utilizes counseling strategies that promote learning.

Demonstrates the belief that all students can learn and encourage achievement at the highest level for each student. Promotes positive self-concept in students.

Guides individuals and groups of students through the development of educational and career plans and career development activities.

Provides individual and group counseling and guidance to assist in meeting the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students.

Identifies and uses counseling strategies and resources that are appropriate to the individual and special needs of students in the areas of academic failure, attendance, personal, and crisis counseling.

Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.

Refers students with problems to appropriate program specialists or community agencies.

Promotes partnerships and maintains regular communication.

Participate in, coordinate and conduct activities that contribute to the effective operation of the counseling program and school.

Participate in and facilitate the intervention team process.

Consults with students, parents, teachers, and other school and community personnel to assist in meeting the needs of students.

Maintains accurate records and appropriate oral and written communication.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

    Minimum qualifications include a valid Iowa teaching certificate, a Master’s degree in School Counseling from an accredited college or university. Must possess proper state certification and licensure for the position. The employee is expected to demonstrate continued professional growth specific to the program(s).

    COMMUNICATION SKILLS

    Strong written and verbal communication skills are critical to the success of this position. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with a variety of individuals and groups from all levels of the organization, including staff, principals, and central administration. Communication will include individual to large group presentations as well as written communications and reports. The individual must have effective listening skills.

    ANALYTICAL and REASONING SKILLS

    The individual must have a solid background in assessment and have the ability to interpret data, which may be very complex and varied. Must be able to apply assessment strategies and link assessment data analysis to school improvement, curriculum, and professional development.

    TECHNOLOGY SKILLS

    Position requires the individual to be competent in a variety of methods in research and information gathering through technology. The ability to present and communicate through technology is required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

    Normal office physical demands. May periodically have moderate physical demands and may be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Generally, the employee works inside.

    OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED

    Will perform other duties as may be assigned by the superintendent or designee, necessary and appropriate to the achievement of the program and/or District goals and objectives.
