Position Summary Information

Position Summary

Slippery Rock University is currently recruiting for a patrol officer. Patrol officers on a university campus perform community oriented policing. Our officers are highly interactive with the student population as many students are away from home for the first time and seek guidance and direction from our officers. The role is one of assistance and enforcement, and the officers are viewed as problem solvers. We look for leadership potential and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to make presentations and relate to our student population. The officers provide a police presence that promotes the safety and security of all members of the University community.

This is an essential personnel position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

Enforce Commonwealth of PA laws and University regulations

Patrols campus by foot, bike or vehicle

Monitors/responds to calls for criminal, general assistance, campus emergencies

Provides emergency first aid as needed

Completes written reports on necessary forms promptly and accurately

Patrols campus property and buildings to assure proper security and reports general building and grounds security issues

Completes/files reports of crime and other police matters and conducts initial investigations;

Provides assistance to other local law enforcement agencies as needed

Provides safety and law enforcement for extra-curricular, social and recreational events and activities

May advise student or community activity groups

Files appropriate criminal charges for violation of Commonwealth laws and/or enforces vehicle code violations

Investigates traffic accidents and prepares reports

Directs traffic, enforces parking regulations, makes criminal arrests, serves warrants, transports prisoners, takes fingerprints, attends hearings, testifies and enforces University policies and procedures

Attends required training

Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Must have formal training in the provisions of basic police services as certified through ACT 120 training; or any equivalent experience or training; possession of a valid driver’s operator’s license; ability to meet such qualifications regarding strength, agility and health required. The successful candidate must also satisfactorily pass psychological and medical testing, as well as be able to be commissioned in Pennsylvania. Candidate must be available to work shifts, holidays and weekends. A successful campus interview and passing a criminal background check required.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants who have had police work within the last two years; have knowledge of Commonwealth criminal and traffic laws, rules and regulations; experience with computer software, including Microsoft Word Office Suite; excellent communication skills; and possess an understanding of diverse populations.
