Burkholder's Country Market Fresh/Perishable Manager in Spring Mills, Pennsylvania

Directs the activities of the Assistant Fresh/Perishable Manager as well as Supervisors from the Kitchen, Deli and Bakery. Also directs the activities of the Prep cooks, Dishwashers, Deli Associates, Bakers, Cake Decorators, Finishers and Bakery Sales Associates.

Summary: Leads the Fresh Department Team in the preparation, serving and retailing of excellent,creative, and innovative foods and beverages while maintaining Burkholder's Market system of qualityassurance, objectives for sales/supply costs, margin and inventory turns. Assists with ordering and receiving as needed. Grows, grooms and mentors the team in professionalism. Provides the best service possible by preparing each product in compliance with company specifications and consistency to meet and exceed the expectations our customers. Ensures that all food production equipment and work areas are cleaned and maintained to company standards. Oversees the assignment and evaluation of work for all food production and sales areas. Introduces new and creative food and beverage offerings several times a year in the Kitchen, Deli, Hot Bar, and Bakery.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Supervises and coordinates the activities concerning food Preparation, Kitchen, Bakery, Deli and Fresh Department Sales.
  • Sets an example of service, hospitality and cooperation to the Fresh department Team members discouraging and addressing conflict and gossiping that would hinder customer service excellence.
  • Maintains lines of communication between the Fresh Department and all other Departments of

Burkholder's Market, fostering cooperation and teamwork.

  • Helps to create a work environment that is cooperative, fun, productive and safe and that focuses on solutions.
  • Coordinates product planning, production, and preparation. Apportions products according to predetermined margin goals and utilizes food surplus to control food costs.
  • Calculates prices as needed and informs scanning
  • Ensures appropriate handling of returns and a system to ensure credit from suppliers for product .
  • Coordinates and oversees periodic inventory counts
  • Works with store manager to set, document, and ensure standards for merchandising are set for all department team members to follow
  • Attends store meetings as required
  • Sets stocking priorities for department staff to ensure shelves/bins/coolers are fully stocked and rotated for freshness. Stocks items along with staff.
  • Attends trade shows for new trends and products, food ideas and equipment
  • Assists in preparing budgets for margin, food cost, labor, equipment, and direst costs. Works with the Assistant Fresh Department Manager to meet or exceed targets.
  • Hires, schedules, trains, supervises, evaluates, and motivates Fresh department staff
  • Does weekly order(s) for supplies, foods, and products as needed. Assures that items are properly stored, shelved, and rotated.
  • Organizes work schedules for team members with appropriate coverage in all kitchen, Deli, bakery, and Deli/Bakery sales areas.
  • Maintains displays, prep, and storage areas in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department and sound merchandising standards.
  • Follow safety, storage, and labeling procedures
  • Uses equipment safely and monitors cooler temperatures
  • Resolves customer service complaints in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Establishes and enforces Fresh department policies and procedures regarding service,cleanliness, store appearance and safety
  • Completes inspection of all service personnel as stated in departmental dress-code
  • Supervises cooking and baking personnel. Sampling, smells, and observes food to ensure conformance to recipes and Burkholder's standards of appearance, taste, and freshness.
  • Plans menus for special events, buffets, and caterings.
  • Becomes proficient in the operation and training of all aspects of the POS system, being able to troubleshoot problems as needed.
  • Supervises personnel to ensure cleanliness of kitchen, bakery, deli, and all equipment in these areas.
  • Maintains procedures for tracking cost, waste, and quality control

  • Ability to have a flexible work schedule, including nights and Saturdays. Works at least one opening and one closing shifts a week in order to monitor and teach the procedure expectations of the department.
  • Must have a strong culinary aptitude from work and/or educational experience
  • Ability to create new and appetizing items for in-store, Hot Bar, and catering customers.
  • Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive company and employee information.
  • Ability to deal with other team members in a straightforward and honest manner in order to facilitate cooperation and constant improvement in teamwork, and therefore the success of Burkholder's Market
  • Ability to learn and teach proper money-handling procedures
  • Ability to be highly organized and multi-task
  • Ability to accept direction and priorities form the store manager and owner
  • Ability to maintain order, organization, and attention to detail.

  • Ability to meet grooming standards of Burkholder's Market dress code and Fresh department dress code
  • Ability to meet attendance requirements as specified in the handbook and departmental attendance requirements

Education/Experience: Associates Degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or at least five (5) years' experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret instructions, correspondence, memos, and recipes. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before customers and team members

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages, and overtime. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to observe, react quickly and adjust to different situations involving customers and team members.
