The Allen Lab at the Stanford University School of Medicine (www.allenlabstanford.org) seeks a skilled and motivated Life Science Research Professional 1 (LSRP) to join an exciting new research endeavor studying the fundamental molecular and neural circuit mechanisms underlying brain homeostasis, resilience, and degeneration. The LSRP will work under the general guidance of the Primary Investigator and lab members to provide basic lab management and experimental assistance in mapping and characterizing brain function at the cellular and circuit levels. This entails using approaches ranging from basic histology, behavior, and molecular biology to cutting-edge techniques in spatial transcriptomics, functional genomics, and systems neuroscience. This position provides an opportunity for a motivated individual to gain experience working at the leading edge of research spanning bioengineering, neuroscience, and genetics, in a fast-paced, teamwork-oriented environment that aims to provide excellent training and mentorship for all members. Ideally, we are seeking a 2-year commitment, starting as soon as July.

The LSRP will interpret results and make suggestions that may lead to inclusion in publications. The LSRP may assist in training new staff and students on techniques as necessary, as well as performing lab management duties such as ordering supplies, maintaining lab records, and adhering to all Stanford safety regulations. Performance of experimental techniques, interpretation of results, troubleshooting procedures, and recommendations for modifications of techniques and approaches will be expected, with on the job training in specific techniques provided as needed. The LSRP must be self-motivated, a quick learner, technically adept, accurate, efficient, organized, and able to keep detailed records. The LSRP must have good general basic computer skills, excellent communication skills, and able to work as part of team. Some more advanced computational skills (e.g. basic Python programming) are a plus. In addition, the LSRP is expected to assist in the drafting, submitting, revising, and monitoring of animal use protocols.

Duties include:

  • Basic lab management: ordering items, keeping track of essential lab stocks, maintain chemical inventory and safety records, general lab support.

  • Assisting in training new staff on lab procedures and techniques.

  • Working in collaboration with other lab members to plan experiments as part of ongoing research projects in the lab. These experiments may include answering basic scientific questions or developing new tools or approaches.

  • Working as part of a team to conduct experiments and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.

  • Analyzing the resulting data in collaboration with other lab members.

  • Contributing to the resulting publications, including participating in preparing written documents such as manuscripts, presentations, and proposals.

*- Other duties may also be assigned
