What You'll Contribute

The Director, Credit Risk Review, is a key leadership position within Sallie Mae’s 2nd line of defense Credit Risk Management team. This role will report to the Chief Credit Risk Officer with responsibilities that include

  • Leading the 2nd line review of credit transactions and business control designs related to underwriting, portfolio management and loss mitigation processes. Evaluate risk of strategy changes and other execution risks.

  • Providing design testing and monitoring for credit controls and oversight framework including results that support credit risk appetite, risk metrics thresholds, and limits.

  • Using analytical techniques to provide insights into credit root causes at strategy, segment level and assessment of emerging risk.

  • Developing monitoring for credit decision processes based on aggregation of component (models used in credit decisions, alt-data and other tools) risk and complexity.

  • Credit Review and Challenge: Interface with business partners and regulators on portfolio reviews and exams. Document and communicate results to senior leadership.

The successful incumbent will be an innovation leader through identifying opportunities and driving actions.

What You'll Do

Credit Risk Review

  • Lead 2nd line analytical review of credit risk credit transactions and business control designs related to underwriting, portfolio management, and loss mitigation processes.

  • Evaluate risk impact of strategy changes, environmental changes, and related layered risk.

  • Provide analytical support for deep dives into root causes and ad-hoc credit reporting. Deliver narratives of observations and preparation of presentation materials.

  • Manage real-time trigger reporting.

Portfolio monitoring and risk limit setting

  • Provide design testing and monitoring for credit controls and oversight framework including results that support credit risk appetite, risk metrics thresholds, and limits.

  • Use analytical techniques to provide insights into credit root causes at strategy, segment level and assessment of emerging risk.

  • Communicate findings and recommended enhancements to business partners and review remediation

Credit components (Data, Tools and Counterparty)

  • Develop best-in-class testing and monitoring for credit decision processes based on component aggregation of component (models used in credit decisions, alt-data and other tools) risk and complexity.

  • Design and supports business cycle and credit impact assessments. Benchmarks credit analytics with mindset of continuous improvement.

Credit review and challenge

  • Manage documentation, process, and standards for compliance adhering to policy and testing requirements.

  • Assist in the compilation of the quarterly Chief Credit Officer submissions.

  • Interface with business partners and regulators on reviews and exams. Documents and communicates results to senior leadership.

What You Have

Minimum education, skills and experience required.

• Undergraduate degree in statistics, economics, mathematics, or other quantitative science

• 7+ years of credit strategy development or credit analytics experience

• 3 - 5 years of experience in 2nd Line of Defense performing credit review and challenge function

• Practical experience using statistical tools (e.g., SAS, Python, R, Tableau etc.).

• Experience in data management and self-sufficiency in data querying

• Familiarity with credit policy, procedures, and transaction testing

• Understanding of regulatory environment

• Card or Student lending experience

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to deliver presentations to various levels of management

• Strong organizational skills with attention to details

• Strong team player who listens to stakeholders and works effectively toward solutions

Preferred education, skills, and experience.

• Exposure to machine learning

• Credit Bureau Data Management experience
