OPS NUTRITION EDUCATORDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Certifies and recertifies clients for the WIC program including nutrition assessment and assignment of nutrition risk factors based upon procedures found in DHM 150-24 Policy and Procedure Manual. Prescribes and makes changes in the WIC food packages for clients.
Provides participant-centered nutrition counseling/education that is pertinent to the needs of the client.
Promotes breastfeeding/human milk feeding as the normal and preferred method of infant feeding in WIC clinics, support groups, and other locations as necessary.
Provides basic breastfeeding information and assists in teaching clients about breastfeeding, use of breastfeeding equipment, i.e. Electric or manual pumps.
Responsible for occasionally working in a CLIA waivered laboratory to obtain anthropometric and hematological data. Performs and records accurate measurements (heights/lengths and weights) as needed for certification or follow-up. Uses CDC-approved equipment correctly. Will obtain hemoglobin correctly and check immunization status in FL Shots and accurately into the FL-WiSE system
Participates in VENA (Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment) principles that include critical thinking, open-ended questions, readiness for change and client-centered goal setting.
Completes all required reports, charting, documentation requirements, requests and assignments correctly and within needed time frames. Functions with a team. May be cross-trained and expected to foster teamwork when clinic staff is short.
Attends meetings and participates in Leon CHD committees as needed.
Adheres to Leon CHD Confidentiality and Security policies and procedures and attends annual confidentiality and security trainings and updates.
Provides high risk nutrition care plans for clients enrolled in the WIC Program.
Documents high risk nutrition care plan in the FLWiSE system using the SOAP (Subjective, Objectives, Assessment and Plan) method. Provides close follow up to high-risk nutrition clients ensuring the required number of high-risk contacts are met.
Collects and evaluates information from the WIC record which can be used for quality improvement purposes.
Makes client referrals other provider agencies in an appropriate manner.
Maintains records and reports such as the Employee Activity Report (EARS), travel and time sheets in an accurate and timely manner
Has a working knowledge of the FLWiSE System.
Attends and participates in staff development, training and required in-service training sessions, as well as regularly scheduled departmental staff meetings.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

This position provides nutrition assessment, nutrition education, breastfeeding education and counseling including documenting high-risk care plans, when appropriate, to clients enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). This position requires independent judgment based on written policy and procedures. This is an OPS Nutrition Educator position located at the WIC office in Tallahassee (one of two), the Wakulla/Crawfordville office once monthly, and the Franklin (Apalachicola or Carrabelle) office once monthly. This position reports to the Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor. Candidate must have good communication skills and demonstrate responsibility for the integrity and confidentiality of data sets under their control.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors or Master’s degree (already completed) from an accredited college or university in Dietetics, Nutrition Science, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, or Public Health Nutrition.
Must have reliable transportation—travel is 10-25% of this position.
PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates who meet qualifications and are eligible to take the RD Exam
Experience performing Nutrition Educator duties in a health care setting
Experience certifying or recertifying clients in WIC or a similar program
Experience working with diverse populations
Experience developing nutrition education plans and nutrition assessments for clients
Experience making client referrals to other agencies
Experience providing breastfeeding promotion, support and /or counseling to clients
Bilingual English / Spanish
