NASCO Senior Technical Manager, Observability in Tallahassee, Florida

Overview

As the Senior Technical Manager, Observability Leader, you will lead a transformative shift in how NASCO monitors and manages its systems. You'll champion leading-edge observability solutions, fostering a data-driven culture across development, production support, security, and infrastructure. Your expertise will be crucial in designing a comprehensive strategy to proactively identify and address issues, ensuring peak application performance and uptime.

This role leads two dedicated teams specializing in Instana and Grafana, ensuring they effectively leverage these powerful tools. You'll champion a shift towards proactive monitoring, equipping teams with the knowledge and tools to translate data into actionable insights for faster decision-making and problem resolution. This role offers the opportunity to make a significant impact on NASCO's system health and overall success by collaborating with teams to gather needs, provide updates, and ensure alignment on observability initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes comprehensive observability strategies aligned with company goals, leveraging Instana and Grafana for maximum system performance and reliability

  • Designs and implements effective monitoring and alerting solutions to proactively identify and address performance issues

  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to gather needs, provide updates, and ensure alignment on observability initiatives

  • Analyzes system metrics and performance data to uncover optimization opportunities, scalability improvements, and cost savings

  • Establishes and maintains documentation, standards, and best practices for observability processes, ensuring consistency and efficiency

  • Manages day-to-day vendor relationships and ensure processes license renewals for observability/monitoring tools are processed in a timely manner to ensure for continuous application and system observability

  • Contributes to defining, updating, and maintaining the overall observability processes and procedures

  • Ensures the Observability infrastructure can be recovered during the annual Disaster Recovery Test, including onsite participation

  • Leads subject matter experts for tool configuration, customization, and application integrations

  • Collaborates with teams to troubleshoot and resolve complex incidents, minimizing operational impact

  • Leads, influences and manages a team of resources to include conducting talent acquisition activities, coaching and/or mentoring, and identifying training requirements for associates

  • Conducts performance management activities, including performance reviews, goals, development and continuous feedback

  • Determines the appropriate staffing mix of contractors and associates to maintain steady work and stay within budget

  • Creates, manages, and administers an annual departmental budget which may include billable hours and percentage targets

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Deep understanding of observability principles and proven experience with monitoring and visualization tools, including configuration, customization, and troubleshooting especially Instana and Grafana

  • Knowledge of distributed mid-tier technologies

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, adept at conveying technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences across all levels

  • Knowledge of distributed mid-tier technologies

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and motivate a team, fostering a collaborative and innovative environment

  • A strategic thinker who can develop and execute comprehensive observability strategies aligned with company goals

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, building strong relationships, and driving alignment on shared objectives

  • Commitment to staying current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and best practices in observability and related fields

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge in mid-tier technologies such as Pega, Unix, Linux, WebSphere, JBOSS, and DB2

Required Experience:

  • 6 years related experience

  • 2 years of experience managing a team of technical resources

  • 2 years of experience with Instana, Grafana or other APM tool

  • 2 years of experience in a similar leadership role within observability, monitoring, or performance analysis

Required Training, Certification and Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Information Systems, or a related field or equivalent work experience
