The Woodlands Hospital a primary and secondary care hospital serving North Harris and Montgomery counties. Clinical services include cardiovascular services, diagnostic imaging, women’s services (digital mammography and bone density studies), neurosciences, pediatric care (Newborn and Level II nurseries) and surgery, pathology and pulmonary services, and sleep disorders. Clinical affiliations include The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Radiation Treatment Center, and Texas Children’s Hospital.

Assumes the responsibility for providing surgical assistance under the direct supervision and direction of the operating surgeon. The CFA function as interdisciplinary team member to provide a safe surgical environment with optimal outcomes for the patient. Practices in collaboration with and at the direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative phase of the patient’s perioperative experience. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, the CFA can assist with the other patient care activities
Works under the direct supervision of the surgeon
Facilitates the physicians preference and communicates with other team members
Demonstrates knowledge of patient safety
Along with the surgeon assumes the accountability for verification of the correct surgical site
Accepts appropriate delegated medical function as define within the CFA scope of practice
Participate in the orientation of new employees and students
Uses surgical instruments to assist the surgeon and facilitate the surgical intervention
Handles tissue safely
Serves as a patient advocate
Performs other duties as requested, according to experience and the level of skills
Participation in data collection
Participation in a unit, organization, or community research committee or program
Sharing of research activities with others surgical technicians within the Perioperative Department
Assist with using research findings in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines for client care
Improves knowledge base through attendance and participation in continuing education programs
Staff development, formal and informal to increase clinical knowledge and improve critical thinking
Obtains 20 CEU’s annually
Role models positive guest relations and collaborative practice
Serves as a leader in the development and attainment of organizational goals as they pertain to the Certified First Assistant
Actively Participates in professional organization related to practice (such as: AST, NSAA)
Education and Licensure Required:
*Certified Surgical First Assistant (CST/CFSA)
- Credentialing through Medical Staff Office
*Two (2) years of experience working in a surgical setting
