DNV GL Power System Study Engineer in Toronto, Ontario

DNV Energy Systems’ group has an exciting opportunity for a Power System Study Engineer, in its Renewables & Power Grids service area. Our team provides creative, cost effective and practical solutions to stakeholders in the power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. The Engineer must demonstrate vision and drive and be passionate about contributing to the growth of the Power Systems Advisory business in North America. The ideal candidate will contribute in delivering technical insights and providing customers with excellent customer service.
This position is Remote or based out within reasonable commuting distance from any of our DNV offices in Canada
What You’ll Do
Perform electrical power system steady state, short circuit, dynamic and transient stability analyses for renewable generation interconnection including Wind (Onshore, Offshore), Solar, Storage, hybrid projects
Perform electrical grid short term and long term transmisison planning studies for onshore and offshore generation interconnections, load interconnections, transmission development and interconnections
Perform Voltage ride through (VRT) studies, dynamic model quality tests, model benchmarking analysis using different power system modeling softwares
Produce and/or review quality technical reports and presentations for both internal and external stakeholders
Develop or modify automation scripts to enhance the efficiency, speed and accuracy of technical simulations
Actively attend (in person or remote) industry stakeholder meetings
stay up to date with assigned market changes in terms of NERC, FERC planning procedures, policy changes and developments
Contribute to the team’s research and innovation activities in terms of development of new techniques and/or analytical tools to further the team’s performance in terms of efficiency and/or capability improvements
Cultivate new customer relationships, and assist in preparing responses to Requests for Proposals (RFP) and provide Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) for new tenders/bids/opportunities
What is Required
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
In-depth understanding of fundamentals of electric power systems and renewable energy
Direct work experience in transmission planning and development, generation or load interconnection related analyses
Minimum 2 + years of working experience at Utility, ISO/RTO, Consulting environment
Minimum 2 + years of hands-on experiences with power-system tools such as PSS/E
Knowledge of North American ISO/RTO grid interconnection and corresponding planning practices, system impact studies, NERC standards such as TPL/MOD/CIP
Working knowledge of automation scripts such as Python
Strong organizational, interpersonal (written & verbal) skills, problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to work in a dynamic team environment
Excellent oral and written communications skills in English

What is Preferred
Active PE License
Graduate level degree with emphasis on Electric Power Systems
Demonstrable hands-on experience with one or more power system analysis software packages including TSAT, TARA, ASPEN, PSLF
Knowledge of ERCOT Electricity Market planning & interconnection practices
Knowledge of Northeast Electricity Markets (such as PJM, NYISO, ISONE) planning & interconnection practices
