General Description

This is a responsible position involving the maintenance of the City’s infrastructure and services. Utilize the tools and equipment to perform general diagnostic, maintenance and repair to waste systems including, but not limited to grease interceptors, storm water management facilities, oil/sand interceptors, and sewer lines. Field supervises skilled and semi-skilled Service Workers. This position reports to the Division Crew Chief. Must be able to work a flexible schedule. On a rotating basis, all department employees will be required to be on-call.

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist Crew Chief with managing project scope and deliverables to ensure the City’s objectives are accomplished.

  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of all field crew members in the absence of the Crew Chief.

  • Diagnose issues and repair waste systems including but not limited to grease interceptors, storm water management facilities, oil/sand interceptors, and sewer lines.

  • Direct and instruct other workers regarding assignments, diagnoses, and repairs.

  • Utilize various manual, gas, and electrical tools and equipment in the performance of assigned tasks and maintains such for safe and productive use.

  • Assist with cutting, fitting, laying, repairing, tapping, cleaning and flushing of pipelines, valves and fittings.

  • Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, trench digging, main and pipe repair, laying, and backfilling.

  • Repair stormwater and wastewater lines, respond to wastewater backups, broken mains, lift station issues, storm drainage backups, asphalt repairs, concrete repair, and re-sod construction areas when work is completed.

  • Install, perform routine maintenance, and repair stormwater and wastewater lines, streets, sidewalks, grounds, and equipment.

  • Required to operate a motor vehicle in performance of daily assigned tasks.

  • Drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, gravel, and sand.

  • Mow, edge, rake, weed, blow, shovel, trim, and clean areas maintained by the Utilities Department, to include maintenance of sidewalks, roadways, lift stations, bridges, storm drain inlets, manholes, grates, and gutters.

  • Responsible for opening and closing the facility and locking and unlocking facilities as directed.

  • Responsible for ensuring that proper apparatus, equipment, and supplies required for assigned tasks are available and in proper and safe working order.

  • Inspect and perform preventative and corrective maintenance duties as assigned.

  • Maintain a variety of records relating to inspections, maintenance activity, and other work assignments.

  • Inform the Crew Chief of all work-related issues and problems that may affect and/or improve the operation of the water department.

  • Strive to maintain an effective working relationship with fellow employees and management, as necessitated by the nature of the work.

  • Preparation before and clean up after a natural disaster; may be placed on standby status prior to a declared emergency.

  • Attends periodic job specific training sessions, workshops, and conferences as required.

Minimum Qualifications, Licenses and Certifications

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.

  • High school graduation or completion of GED

  • Three (3) years’ experience in stormwater/wastewater management

  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Environmental Conditions

  • Knowledge of modern techniques, methods, procedures, and practices of providing and maintaining municipal infrastructure.

  • Ability to perform basic mathematics.

  • Ability to oversee public works construction projects and maintenance programs as assigned.

  • Ability to work on the computer for Lift station monitoring, work orders and training.

  • Responsible for knowing and applying policies, procedures and all safe work practices.

  • Perform all duties in conformance with established and appropriate safety and security standards.

  • Responsible for the maintenance of all work tools, equipment and vehicles assigned within the utilities division.

  • Demonstrate thorough knowledge of and adheres to all established department, division, and town policies and procedures.

  • Ability to respond to after-hours emergency call-ins within a reasonable amount of time while on call

  • Ability to comply with work schedules and maintain a satisfactory safety and attendance record

  • Ability to perform all tasks of Utilities Maintenance I or II

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to work flexible hours.

  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to access, input and retrieve information from a computer.

  • Ability to lift 60 pounds on a frequent basis

  • Ability to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, see and smell

  • Regularly required to use hands to feel, handle and operate controls and tools

  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, possibly in inclement weather
