Governors State University{tabindex="0" target="_blank" rel="noopener"}invites qualified candidates to apply for the position ofAdmissions Counselor. The primary role of the Admissions Counselor is to help increase the number of qualified applicants to the University and to enroll the most talented and diverse student body. The Admissions Counselor will execute targeted interpersonal, virtual and in-person engagement with prospective students, as defined by enrollment goals that are in alignment with the Universitys Strategic Enrollment Plan. The Admissions Counselor will be responsible for counseling prospective freshman, transfer and graduate-level students, participating in both on-campus and virtual events, in-person and virtual pre-admissions appointments, and through the Universitys web-based chat software.

Essential Responsibilities

50% Meet with prospective freshman, transfer, graduate and non-degree seeking students and their families and various groups to provide information and advice about academic programs at the University. Provide extensive personal interaction, phone and email contact with prospective students and applicants. Communicate effectively with special student populations including first-generation, Latinx, veteran, students of color, adult learns and other at-risk student populations. Establish and nurture relationships with pertinent university personnel that serve as a conduit for students to learn about Governors State University. Maintain updated knowledge of the admissions process and all aspects of other support and student activities as well as basic working knowledge of the processes that complete the enrollment management cycle (registration, orientation, financial aid, housing, and student life). Support department, divisional and university strategic plans.

20% Utilize the Universitys technical systems (Slate, Colleague, Perceptive Content, Online Chat, etc.) to complete admissions counseling functions; assist students through the admissions process; provide support for Office Manager (including but not limited to; answering questions from walk-in visitors; responding to telephone inquiries; responding to departmental email inquiries; retrieve and respond to voice mail messages on the main phone lines).

10% Review prospective student credentials and make recommendations for admission consistent with university policies and procedures; review freshman applicants and make admission decisions based on holistic review.

10% Collaborate with Associate Director of Admissions and Coordinator of Admissions Events and Communication to assist with on-campus and virtual prospective student engagement events. Represent the University at select on-campus and off-campus events. Manage a recruitment territory.

5% Perform special projects relative to the overall enrollment marketing plan developed by the Office of Admissions and other duties as assigned.

5% Perform other duties as assigned.

Required and Preferred Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor\'s degree
  • Two years of college admissions experience
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Available to work evenings and weekends as necessary

Desired Education and Experience

  • Masters degree
  • Knowledge of admissions, recruitment and financial aid pra tices in higher education
  • Experience counseling/advising students
  • Professional experience using Ellucian Colleague and Slate CRM
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)

Competencies

Excellent verbal and written communications skills. The ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently. General knowledge of student information systems: Ellucian Colleague, Slate, and Perceptive Content (or similar systems). Knowledge of operation of computer systems utilizing various software packages. Knowledge of the organization, programs, practices, and procedures of the unit is central to the performance of duties. Functions with independence that has a significant impact on the unit.
