JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Director of Learning Services is a valuable member of the Morgan Academic Center (MAC) (https://morgancenter.psu.edu/) team and will directly report to the Director of the MAC. This position will oversee the implementation of learning services, programming, and the tutoring and mentoring program. Additionally, the Director of Learning Services will support the department's programming by identifying student-athlete's academic skill sets and designing systems to help them achieve their desired academic outcomes.

We accomplish this mission by embracing and promoting the academic and athletic missions of the University, the Office of Undergraduate Education, and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise full-time Learning Service Support staff and learning specialist assistants.

  • Lead the implementation of the Learning Support Services program, which includes learning services and tutoring.

  • Coordinate the recruitment, training, continued education, and evaluation of Learning Services Support program staff.

  • Review background information and current academic performance of referred student-athletes and determine if specialized assistance is needed.

  • Conducted initial assessments and coordinated educational testing for incoming student-athletes with learning disabilities.

  • Determine the need for diagnostic evaluation/testing by reviewing standardized testing records, interviews, and personal observations of each student-athlete.

  • Collaborate with Student Services Coordinators to design and implement academic success plans for underprepared students and academic support plans for student-athletes with learning challenges.

  • Review reports/records to determine need for specialized services for at-risk students and students with diagnosed disabilities in seeking appropriate resources

  • Develop individualized academic support plans tailored to the needs of each student

  • Work with individuals and groups of student-athletes to teach and develop successful academic skills in reading, writing, organization, time management, testing and learning strategies, and other general study skill areas.

  • Liaison with other campus departments to ensure the appropriate support and practices for student-athletes.

  • Work in conjunction with the department’s compliance office to stay current on all rules and regulations and ensure we operate with the highest level of integrity.

  • Maintain databases for data collection and prepare reports regarding student needs

  • Work in a cooperative, team atmosphere to support student-athletes’ needs.

  • Provide coaching staff information regarding potential academic services and support to prospective incoming student-athletes and their families

  • May teach a section of the first-year student-athlete seminar, which is a part of the overall First-Year Enrichment Program.

  • Monitor evening study halls as assigned.

  • Comply with all Penn State, NCAA, and Big Ten rules and regulations.

Education and experience:

Minimally requires a Master's degree and 6 years of relevant experience, o r an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Qualifications

  • Preferred Master's degree or higher in education, college student personnel, psychology, social work, counselor education, higher education administration, or related discipline

  • A minimum of three to five years of experience within a student-athlete academic service unit preferred

  • Experience in developing, evaluating, and implementing a learning support program is a requirement

  • Must be able to work effectively with a diverse student population, have excellent communication and organizational skills, and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision

    This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance F orm, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $74,000.00
