About the Role:

KsqlDB is a stream-processing database capable of doing complex transformations of data in real time, while also providing materialized views and a familiar SQL syntax.Our vision is to turn the database inside out by enabling every organization to transform and query their real-time streams using SQL.

In this role as a Staff Software Engineer at Confluent you will drive our charter to build an elastic, scalable, efficient, SQL-based, stream processing technology that operates both on-prem and in the Cloud. We are looking for strong engineers to help us build out an elastic, scalable, efficient, SQL-based, stream processing technology that operates at scale. What You Will Do:

  • Designing and implementing new stream processing operators, including making extensions to the SQL language to incorporate streaming concepts.

  • Improving the performance, scalability, and elasticity of core stream processing technology like Kafka Streams.

  • Designing solutions to improve the efficiency, reliability, and operability of our distributed, stateful, data processing systems in public clouds.

  • Building novel solutions to enable efficient and scalable querying of state materialized from real time event streams.

  • Interacting with the Apache Kafka and the ksqlDB communities to provide technical guidance and thought leadership in the stream processing space.

  • Mentor a team of high-performing engineers and leads, helping them to continue in growing their skill set through hands-on experience and mentorship.

  • Provide timely and productive feedback, encourage a growth mindset, and advise team members in setting and working toward personal development goals.

  • Nurture a culture of excellence on the team through a focus on hiring, communication, execution, and work quality.

  • Collaborate with others in engineering and product leadership to create the long-term technical and product roadmap and quarterly deliverables for your team.

  • Effectively communicate the roadmap and strategy within the team and across the organization.

  • Create and manage processes that enable the team to do its best work.

What You Will Bring:

  • Minimum of 12+ years of hands-on software development experience.

  • Strong fundamentals in distributed systems design and development. Solid fundamentals in concurrent and multi-threading programming.

  • Ability to anticipate future technical needs for the product and craft plans to realize them.

  • Experience building and operating large-scale systems.

  • Solid understanding of basic systems operations (disk, network, operating systems, etc).

  • A self starter with the ability to work effectively in teams.

  • Experience in enterprise-scale software development.

  • Experience running production services in the cloud.

  • Experience running large stateful data systems and production services in the cloud.

  • A great track record of shipping features and hitting deadlines consistently.

  • Ability to move fast, build in increments, and iterate. A sense of urgency, a mindset towards achieving results, and excellent prioritization skills.

  • Ability to anticipate future technical needs for the product and craft plans to realize them.

  • Ability to influence the team, peers and upper management using effective communication and collaborative techniques.

  • Focus on building and maintaining a culture of collaboration within the team.

  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or equivalent experience. An advanced degree in computer science is preferred.

What Gives You an Edge:

  • Experience in open-source development

  • Experience using Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache Spark is a big plus

  • Interest in evangelism (giving talks at tech conferences, writing blog posts evangelizing Kafka)

  • Experience working on stream processing technology or query processing systems

  • Additional highly desirable experience

  • Stream processing systems

  • Structured query serving systems

  • Data processing systems in general

  • Storage experience
