Cornell Cooperative Extension Animal Care Technician - Yaphank NY in United States

Responsible for the daily feeding of the farm livestock and the cleaning of their living areas. May assist with animal sciences educational program set up for youth and adults, as requested. Acts as liaison between the visiting public and the farm administration, especially on weekends. Adheres to farm safety plan.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, including currently enrolled in HS with relevant experience.

  • Ability to build working relationships to solve problems and achieve common goals and work effectively and cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including, but not limited to:

  • Lifting fifty (50) pound bags of feed and bales of hay,

  • Pushing full wheel barrels,

  • Carrying 5 gallons (40#) water buckets, and

  • Feeding animals over uneven terrain, ice, and mud.

  • Must be able to catch and restrain large (1000#) animals and have the stamina to hold up horse legs while performing hoof care, restrain goats and sheep for hoof care, deworming and clipping, and shearing.

  • Move 200# market hogs onto trailers.

  • Move 500# hog sows in the farrowing house.

  • Repair fences and move calf hutches.

  • Must be capable of climbing into the squeeze chute and over fences.

  • Must have the ability to safely operate heavy equipment (some operable using hand and foot pedals), i.e., tractors, skidsteer/bobcat, manure spreader, etc.

  • Ability to complete tasks outdoors in all types of weather (snow, sleet, ice, rain, heat), i.e., raking, shoveling, carrying feed and water buckets to animals, climbing, lifting, etc. over slippery, muddy, icy terrain

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, inclement weather (snow, sleet, and ice storms) weekends, holidays, and evening hours, as needed;

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience working on a farm, including the operation of heavy equipment.

    POSITION DETAILS:

Salary: $17.84 per hour

Hours: 0-20 hours a week (varies) No relocation or VISA Sponsorship available
