CBC News is looking for an experienced data reporter to join News Labs, a multidisciplinary team of journalists, designers, and developers.

You must be able to answer questions of significant public interest using a quantitative, data driven approach. Your comfort with data gathering and analysis, as well as your familiarity with code, allows you to spearhead original storytelling ideas and work closely with developers and designers to lead the way when it comes to innovative storytelling.

You will pitch, develop, and produce stories for digital – including video and social treatments –by gathering, analyzing, and visualizing data. Your work will include interviewing experts, in-depth research, and writing compelling narratives. Most of your time will be dedicated to exclusive data analysis, presented through personalized and immersive interactive features. Additionally, you’ll support the newsroom on breaking news or special projects as needed.

Candidates should have a strong journalistic background and proficiency in data manipulation using programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, or R. Experience with data visualization tools or libraries will be an asset.

Effective communication and collaboration are crucial in your ability to deliver impactful, far-reaching projects on the News Labs team. You will also work with the Senior Data Producer to help advise reporters across the organization around data stories.

Your work is governed by and adheres to CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. Advice and guidance are available, but initiative and independent judgment are expected.

Qualifications

  • Strong experience in a specialist data journalism role.

  • Proven record generating ideas for original data stories.

  • Proficiency in data manipulation using programming languages such as JavaScript, Python, or R. Experience with data. visualization tools or libraries.

  • Minimum five years recent experience in a newsroom or media organization.

  • Highly developed organizational and decision making skills, including the ability to prioritize, organize and pay attention to detail in a deadline driven environment.
