General Motors Lithium Process Technical Specialist in Warren, Michigan

Job Description

This role is categorized as hybrid . This means the successful candidate is expected to report to [ Cole Engineering Center , Warren MI] three times per week, at minimum [or other frequency dictated by the business

GM is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Lithium Process Technical Specialist to join our team at Warren, MI. The candidate will play a pivotal role in leading the effort and responsibility for identifying, designing, developing, and implementing process improvements, as well as supporting strategic site initiatives. The initial focus will be on developing a Li conversion process design that will drive the implementation of the overall commissioning and startup plan for the refinery.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Lead the process design development and execution of the overall commissioning and startup plan for the Lithium Refinery.

  • Identify, design, develop, and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency, productivity, and sustainability of the Lithium Refinery process.

  • Identify potential risks and challenges and develop mitigation strategies to ensure a smooth startup process.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to plan, evaluate, and implement optimization opportunities throughout the refining process efficiently.

  • Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to drive continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Contribute to strategic planning efforts by providing technical expertise and insights related to process design and chemical engineering.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to align process design and technology initiatives with the overall company goals and objectives.

  • Perform disciplined process engineering studies, process verification, understand & reduce variation, perform DOEs.

  • Contribute to the design and operating specification of chemical conversion processes equipment capable of supporting advanced design, material, and process development initiatives.

  • Performing calculations to support the development of mass & energy balances, heat transfer models.

  • Work with manufacturing engineering, product design, and facilities cross functional teams to install and implement a quality control and tracking data base systems to monitor process capability and identify / track history of materials and process settings used to generate prototype design samples.

  • Prepare status updates related to development efforts, report and make recommendations as required and develop appropriate documentation to support the protection of intellectual property.

  • Engage directly with the setup and operation of laboratory and pilot processing equipment in the execution of technology development projects.

  • Engage with Purchasing to enable the procurement of new and retooled equipment with technical statements of work and the evaluation of proposals in support of sophisticated manufacturing development project.

  • Lead simultaneous engineering design and equipment delivery activities with equipment OEMs to ensure the design of manufacturing equipment and processes satisfy project objectives.

  • Develop and maintain a standard BoD and BoP to enable the integration of the chemical material conversion to be manufacturing processes.

  • Support new product introduction and sustaining product process optimizations.

  • Work effectively with cross functional teams to implement new equipment, fixtures, and procedures to improve quality, yield, uptime, cycle time and throughput.

  • Assist with the transfer of processes and product to pilot and manufacturing lines.

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages innovation, creativity, and continuous improvement.

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to team members to maximize their potential and enhance their professional growth.

Additional Job Description

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree or Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering or related field.

  • 8 years of experience in Chemical Processing, Running a pilot Plant or manufacturing plant process design

  • PhD degree preferred

  • Proven track record in process technology, chemical engineering, and process improvement.

  • Strong knowledge of chemical manufacturing processes, technologies, and industry standards.

  • General experience in an industrial environment of chemical manufacturing and specially in Li conversion and refinery process design.

  • Demonstrated experience in solving process yield, throughput and product quality problems.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex issues and develop innovative solutions.

  • Strong leadership and team-building abilities, with a focus on fostering collaboration and driving results.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adapt to changing priorities.

  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills combined with the ability to make engineering decisions based available data and experience.

  • Willing to travel 15%
