Smithsonian Institution Research Ecologist in Washington, District Of Columbia

Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI), Washington, DC. The NZCBI plays a leading role in the Smithsonian's global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists. More than one selection may be made from this announcement. Responsibilities The Research Ecologist is responsible for developing, planning, and executing basic and applied ecological research. In this position, you will: Formulate, develop, and execute research projects that investigate questions about the ecology and conservation of migratory and resident bird populations and their associated biotic communities. Responsible for funding and implementing a productive scientific program as a project member or principal investigator and as a mentor for postdoctoral associates and/or graduate students. Publish results of research on wildlife ecology and conservation in the peer-reviewed literature. Serve as source of scientific information, advice, and training on technical matters within wildlife ecology and conservation. Qualifications Basic Requirements Degree: biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. In addition to the basic education requirement above: Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service. For this position, specialized experience is defined as originating, implementing and leading field research designed to address questions on the ecology of migratory birds; publish lead-authored papers that use or develop quantitative and spatial methods to answer questions about wildlife population ecology; as demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications, expertise in applying statistical models to understand wildlife population ecology; obtained extramural funding for research on wildlife ecology; trained students in wildlife ecology; present multiple talks about avian ecology at a national or international conferences. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped the applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.
