The Production Planning Manager provides hands on oversight of the Graphics and Planning team members and processes. This position is a member of the leadership team and expected to promote the safety of all associates, adherence to quality rules and procedures and work with peers to provide the most cost-effective production plan possible.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure planning processes are executed correctly to support on time shipments, smooth process flow between prepress and warehouse, and WIP/inventory levels are appropriately maintained.
  • Work closely with Customer Service and Production on job sequencing. Obtain input on prioritization as needed based on current conditions.
  • Establish and review scheduling standards to assure accuracy based on changes in equipment
  • Ensure VMI activities as they relate to Planning and Graphics are executed appropriately and in a timely manner
  • Participate in new business implementation:
Handle review/execution of all new art
Understand and track timeline of new business implementation
Ensure all proper approvals are scheduled and obtained (one up artwork as well as press approvals)
  • Maintain tracking system and flow of work for artwork and step/repeat
  • Ensure proper training is identified and delivered to employees
  • Monitor and update all relevant processes as needed to include cylinder proofs.
  • Examine existing processes and failures/success to identify improvement needs, both for the department as well as the plan.
  • Planning and engineering jobs for multiple printing processes with assistance from a Senior Label Process Engineer.
  • Responsible for print quality, color separation requirements and layouts.
  • Schedule print tooling and prepress based on customer needs.
  • Provide pre-production direction to assure prepress and printing accuracy with assistance from a Senior Label Process Engineer.
  • Create / manage Master Estimates
  • Optimize layout and color separation of jobs to maximize production efficiency
  • Uses Radius and PPMS software to plan, manage, coordinate, & prioritize items through the item/job process flow.
  • Works with a Senior Label Process Engineer to determine the design intent specifics, printability and label construction:
    Label dimensions, shape, centerline, multiple wide and repeat
    Label application requirements
    Bottle / product color & requirements
    ECL layout / build
    Copy position
    Material types and availability
    Material widths and availability
    Tooling requirements: print cylinders / end rings / mag cylinder / flex die / hard die / hot stamp
    Print process and sequence: number of colors / Flexo / Litho / Digital / Gravure / Screen / Cold Foil / Hot Stamp / ECL
    Press type / target press / target press capacity
    Ink types
    Ink opacity / fade resistance requirements
    Varnish / release / deadener / adhesive types
    Varnish matte / gloss level requirements
    Luminescence / pearl requirements
    Release / deadener / adhesive requirements
    Color matches

Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding and proven execution of printing principles and printed art preparation.
  • Gravure printing and cylinder manufacturing a plus (5+ years)
  • Print planning or similar estimation experience (5+ years)
  • Previous planning software experience a plus
  • Proficient in the following programs: Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Illustrator, MS Office Suite
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement tools and proven record of adopting new/best practices a plus
