National Park Service Maintenance Mechanic in West Orange, New Jersey
Summary EXTENDED - CLOSING DATE MONDAY NOVEMBER 1. This position is located in Thomas Edison National Historical Park , in the Maintenance Division. This is a permanent Career/Career-Conditional appointment. Responsibilities Primary purpose of this position is to perform building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties. This position will perform carpentry, plumbing, painting and roofing work. Carpentry - construct, alter, modify or repair a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. Build small structures and replace deteriorated sections of existing structures. Constructs interior and exterior stairs. Install roofing, siding, trim, and cabinets. Plumbing - install, modify, repair new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems and showers. Painting - performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion. Paints, decorates, and refinishes a variety of interior and exterior surfaces of offices and buildings, and other structures. Completes all painting, varnishing, etc. functions to include marbling, graining, speckling, tinting, and toning of paint and matching existing colors. Roofing - determines roofing work to be completed, locating leaks and determining their cause and extent of damage, selecting the work method to be followed for repair. AREA INFORMATION: Thomas Edison National Historical Park is located in West Orange, New Jersey and preserves Thomas Alva Edison's laboratory complex, including his library, machine shops, and chemistry lab, his estate Glenmont- a 29 room Victorian style mansion and outbuildings; along with a museum collection of more than 400,000 artifacts and 5 million archival documents. West Orange is a suburban community 10 miles from Newark, NJ and 15 miles from Manhattan, NY. West Orange is connected to both of these cities via commuter rail. Valid state driver's license is required and a condition of employment. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License. You may also be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 5 nights occasionally. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the maintenance mechanic without more than normal supervision(SCREEN OUT) Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (Theoretical, Precise and Artistic) Use of Measuring Instruments Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications (etc.) Knowledge of Materials Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Specialized experience in at least two of the following areas: carpentry, plumbing, painting and roofing. A relocation incentive is not the same as a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and, as such, may be granted in conjunction with one another. Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee. GOVERNMENT HOUSING MAY BE AVAILABLE. Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions. Working Conditions: Exposed to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposed to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
